It was an ordinary day, if by ordinary, you mean having your wife leave you, boss fire you, landlord evict you and getting stuffed in the trunk of a Chevy.

OK, I'm only on page 5 and have over 50 more pages to read in this thread – but so far this one is my favorite. Excellent content and it really grabbed my interest. If this sentence was an indicator of the quality of book to follow I would definitely read on.

Shadow consumed and occupied the night, preventing light of any kind to shine.

"Thanks. Who's that sitting at the bar?"
"Her? Name's Sara - weird, huh?"
"A little... odd, anyway."

The pair sat quietly, sipping their Oly's in stoic silence as tendrils of smoke snaked upward from a shared ashtray.

Transfixed, I read the ad again - shocked, the temptation unexpected and overwhelming, I had to pick up the phone...

The cool air and pungent scent of spruce bid them enter the forest, albeit with caution. Moist needles padded their steps.

It wasn't the being needed that scared - no, hurt me most; it was the being needed only... just - only.

Startled awake, he looked up; streaks of light cut brilliant swaths through the forest canopy. There it was again - "snap!"

A meadowlark piped its song in the distance. The melody beckoned him exit the confines of the forest.

The car jerked, then rocketed forward. All color turned a foggy gray as time slowed to a stop, then "bump."

(From a description of the first car wreck in which I was involved. I came out of the shock some time later, wandering the accident scene, later surprised no one recognized my state of shock. The mind is an amazing thing - knowing we would hit the concrete column supporting the bridge, all I remember of the accident is summarized in those words above).

Hoping he wasn't hogging the forum, he continued with his opening lines....

(Seriously though - hoping I'm not posting too many opening lines at once here... - it's such a good exercise, I'm enjoying doing it...)

He ducked through the door with the wood, stomping snow off his boots. The fire re-kindled, he tended her wounds.

Southward, the vast expanse of the prairie beckoned. Turning his horse, he made his final descent out of the mountains.

And as they looked to the horizon, they saw a brilliant flash and turned their eyes away.

She stared at the figure across from her, petrified. "Are you afraid?" The figure whispers, "Of the truth?"

There was nothing beneath her feet but the canyon, half a mile below - yet she did not fall.
