These are all from my books.

"Around six months before Klansmen were sentenced by a Negro boy to their strange and violent deaths—with most of the town to be condemned to a similar fate—there was a bird sitting on a tree."
--Saint's Haven

"The line in front of the Boy who would be known as The Lightkiller moved slowly, and yet he was constantly pushed by those behind him."
--Hector's Inferno

"Debbie Paulson found him in her closet when she came home that day. She screamed freely for about two seconds until her own stumbling strides intervened."
--Harmony

I ate shoe glue. Today, it's paint chips and honey. I'm slow to grow now, but Jesus walks with me.

This is brilliant. You play outside the box and take risks, don't you? :p

Here's for your 20 words or less:

"An eerie light glowed luminously across the swamp just beyond the sleep little town."

30:

"Through the enveloping gloom, a low, ominous glow was barely perceptible in the distance, dancing through the shadows it created and serving to contrast the sinister darkness all the more."

"In a second's time, scenes buried somewhere deep within his memory flashed before Aiton in his mind's eye, accelerating in mad succession. Smoke. Fire. Screaming. Terror. Darkness. His heart leapt into his throat. Surely...surely, it could not be..."

Okay, sorry, that last one was 39. Well over the limit. :)

The first sentence I posted is the opening line to a novel I've started writing, and the other two sections are clips from the first few paragraphs of the first chapter. It's an allegory of the gospel - sort of like Pilgrim's Progress I guess, though it will never compare to that great book. :)

i wanna read yer novel. What you wrote is like the beginning to a mesmerizingly spell-binding movie...i can picture it now, the movie's first scene....the 2nd sequence is similar and would keep me riveted for more....i'd go see it and prob'ly get the DVD later.

Thanks, LOL. If I ever get it done, maybe. :) Actually that's how I write: I imagine scenes in my mind as if I were watching a movie...and then just write them down. Music helps tremendously too. I pick music appropriate to the scene I'm trying to write and listen to it while I let myself create scenes as I might see them in a movie.
