Sublime was a very good 90s band that didn't necessarily fall into the alternative category. They had a very mellow, often acoustic, sound. Check out "Santeria" and "What I Got".

Ahhh, "Santeria." Great song.

Really, I don't care much for modern rap, too much "bling-bling" (sorry, I couldn't help myself) and not enough substance. Outkast, DMX, or Eminem are practically the only contemporary rap artists I can handle, but even still, a lot of Outkast's stuff is so ridiculous I can only take a little bit before I shut it off, I haven't really heard any DMX songs since the ...And Then There Was X album that I really cared for, and well, Eminem can be too violent and depressing for my tastes. When he's joking around it's awesome though. Mainly I prefer to listen to old-school if I'm listening to rap at all. LL Cool J, Run-DMC, Grandmaster Flash, Sugar Hill Gang, Soul Sonic Force, and other artists that would be considered 'Freestyle' (the dance genre, not freestyle rapping), since they will usually play those songs during old-school radio shows.

Hey I was young and foolish what can I say ;)
To be old and wise you must be young and foolish. ;) But I so agree that Lauryn Hill is good.

My turn...to be honest I can't stand 95% of hiphop and r&b, since it's just become the platform for songs talking about sex, anger and other negative stuff that gives me the irrits. Outkast are OK, only because "Hey Ya" was catchy. Otherwise I have real problems listening to the rest of the stuff because it just don't have real musical instruments, and it's all too similar to be considered ground breakingly original IMHO.
