I would like to have a basic understanding of this language. My grandmother knows some phrases and can speak a short conversation in Cherokee, but that's about it. I would like to know a bit more than that. Can anyone point me to a web site that can show me the basics. (verb conjagations, the preterate, present progressive)...etc. I have the pronouciation and know the sylliably.

The only website I know of that contains language info is the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma at http://www.cherokee.org/

There is also a CD/ tape and booklet set "Cherokee Made Easy", although that is more basic and might not contain what you are looking for

Do you know what this is in Cherokee? It is suppose to be something in Gen. 1:1, I think. I was trying to figure out what God's name is in Cherokee and one of the words that is there several times looks like "RVJ" but the J is backward. Is that God's name or something else in Cherokee. I went to Clingsman Dome in Tenn. and the sign had some Cherokee on it about creation and had Gen. 1:1,9, 10. His name though didn't look like the cherokee translation from OK Cherokee. Do you have a Cherokee Bible? Do you know John 3:16 in Cherokee? I've seen "Amazing Grace" in Cherokee.

I just visited the Cherokee Reservation in NC a little over month ago. We saw 'Unto These Hills.' ^^

I tried learning it, but put it on the backburner because I couldn't find a good audio guide.

It's interesting that you want to learn Tsalagi. Any particular reason it interests you? It's just a rare language. ^^

Well I have a Cherokee background (although I don't look the part, the blonde hair and blue eyes betray me :p ). My last full blooded relative was a 4 or 5 generations back. I just thought I'd get closer to my Native American culture.
I've was at the heritage center in Oklahoma a few years back and it was mentioned breifly by the man who was speaking with my cousins and I.

That's cool. ^^ I understand how you feel. I've been learning my family's language even though no one around me speaks it. It does make you feel closer to your culture/heritage. ^^

You said you were good with pronunciation. Do you know of a good audio guide (preferably online...and free)? That's my biggest barrier right now. heh, you've made me want to take it up again. = )

EDIT: This looks like a good site: http://www.native-languages.org/cherokee.htm#language

There's even a link further down for a program for typing in Tsalagi!
