  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm not sure I was properly made member of this this forum. I hope I am. I'm a Finn with a strong Calvinist conviction. Calvinism is a very rare conviction in a predominantly Lutheran country. But I have studied Calvinism (the TULIP variety) for about 20 years.

Welcome to Christian Forums, StephenV. I know next to nothing about Calvinism. Do Calvinists put their right sock on first or their left sock?

I'm sorry I don't understand your question. My Calvinism is based on 1) the literal understanding of the Bible, 2) the five solas, 3) Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion, 4) the Canons of the Dordrecht (the exposition of TULIP) and 5) the Westminster Confession of Faith. Also, books by Louis Berkhof, D. N. Steele, J. Gresham Machen, R. C. Sproul etc. Yes, I know, my approach is very dogmatic, and can be seen frustrating from the so-called open-minded theology. Also, I try to get an elementary understanding of the Biblical languages since I'm a retired person with perhaps too much of free time on my hands - ad fontes and all that.

But I guess the proper forum to discuss all that is the Presbyterian forum, although I'm not a very good theologian. I'm not a confrontational person by nature. I just want to make sense of things.

What is "so-called open-minded theology"?

Well, I've been called closed-minded. Didn't mean that as an official characterization, sorry if that seemed that way. Like I said, I'm not a good theologian.
We can all be Christians, or we can divide ourselves into different sects. I prefer to be a Christian.
