  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Most Christians will not admit fear of hell is the reason why they remain committed to God. It would be too devastating to admit this.

Yes . It would show that they don't really love Him but rather hate the idea of Hell . The focus is off .

If taken in universal context, sure...I'd accept annihilationism as truth. But then we also have to consider Matthew 25, Rev 20, and Jude 1.

Matthew 25:46
“Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

Jude 1:7
In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.

Ah to take Scripture in it's full and whole context feels good doesn't it?

Unless eternal punishment doesn't mean eternal punishment

Which seems an implicit admission that you had, and have, no earthly clue what the term "universalism" means. Noted.

Indeed.

What he clearly doesn't understand, is that a rejection of a physical torturous hell isn't a rejection of hell itself but a rejection of his theology of hell.

I'm still awaiting your retraction 98cwitr. Accepting that hell exists, that it will be experienced, and that it will be everlasting is completely contrary to the very notion of Universalism. Your accusation is unfounded.

There is a debate whether or not hell exists. Some believe non believers just die, while others are sure of a long and agonizing eternity in hell. Here is my question: Why would God desire hell over death?

Hell is death. It is an everlasting death.

Most christians would never send anyone to burn in hell for eternity. But, we grant God this right. So, why would a loving and kind God rather create hell than a place of nothingness? Does this not seem sadistic?
The moment that you start judging God, you have then become a god. God is just and He will apply His justice is a just way. The one thing that the rich man in the Lazarus and the rich man story (Luke 16) did not do is ask why he was were he was. It appears that he fully understood and agreed with his destination even to the point of wanting to warn his brothers.

As you know, there are a few flavors of universalists. Some, like unitarians, do not believe that there is a hell while others, so called Christian universalists, believe in a hell but disagree with the duration. The arguments from both groups are equally unbiblical.

What I was referring to was my earliest posts here, where I made clear I believe in an everlasting experience of hell which is painful (although I admit saying was not physically torturous) yet was still accused of being a Universalist. I personally don't see how anyone can validly claim I am so with that view.

Sure it's founded. You said there's no fire...I gave you the scriptural proof that there is. Awaiting your rebuttal good sir.

If you are going to accuse me of Universalism, then show proof that I am a Universalist. A member of staff just commented here and seems to see no proof of it. Since Universalism isn't even allowed to be posted here in GT, then my posts should have been staff-edited. As they weren't, then it would show proof your accusation is unfounded.

Universalism has nothing to do with the acceptance or not of physical torment. That's an entirely different topic. Universalism has to do with a duration of hell or if no one will experience hell. Since I don't hold to those, and my posts clearly show that, then any continued attempt of your's to insist that I am a Universalist only continues to put you in a very negative light.

Where is the Universalism? Put up or retract.

On that assumption, no one will be in Hell, because no one would ever want to go there.

BTW, Who created Hell, and set it up as the place where the dead go by default?
They go to Hell by choice, God does not send them there

I think we can all agree, definitively after the 2nd coming, that all people will be in 1 of 2 places.

They go to Hell by choice, God does not send them there

While I completely understand this line of reasoning, it's like saying "A judge doesn't send you to jail, you send yourself there." Not quite, the judge does the sentencing...the convicting...and in this case, the condemning.

From post #13:

God incarnated to save His entire creation.

Definition of universalism:

Universal reconciliation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And based on all your red, bolded text proceeding...you believe we are all reconciled to God, but some won't like it.

There's nothing Biblical here...I'll ask, for the third time, for you to back up your claims with scripture. I do admit that it's quite a warped universalist view, but nevertheless I find it to be fitting the definition.

If you'll turn your attention to Rev. 21 (specifically verse 4), that pretty much debunks your claim that hell will be "here." For you've created a contradiction. On one hand you claim that hell will be here, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, yet SCRIPTURE says that "There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” which references:

Isaiah 25:8
New International Version (NIV)

8 he will swallow up death forever.
The Sovereign LORD will wipe away the tears
from all faces;
he will remove his people’s disgrace
from all the earth.
The LORD has spoken.

And there we have it....

I am pretty sure all people with sin get judged and thrown in hellfire.
I am pretty sure all people who has sin remitted by belief the Lord atoned for them already go to heaven.

From post #13

Believing that God incarnated to save all doesn't mean believing all will accept the gift.

Especially when you take in account the entirety of my post, it is clear that what you have done is quote-mined.

Again, either give proof or retract. Simple as that. Show where I believe all will be saved (though I did say many will experience hell), or that the experience of hell is temporary (though I said it will be everlasting), or that they won't suffer (though I did say they would experience pain far worse than anything physical torture could offer).

Rejection of particular atonement isn't an acceptance of Universalism. If you think otherwise, you're dead wrong.

Do you or do you not believe all will be reconciled?

reconciled, past participle, past tense of rec·on·cile (Verb)
Verb: Restore friendly relations between
Cause to coexist in harmony; make or show to be compatible.

Would you please post Scripture supporting your beliefs or just tell me what your beliefs are formed upon?

Does the Bible actually say, sinners will spend eternity in hell after they die?
no.

Better yet, does the Bible actually say Christians go to heaven after they die?
Or are these merely presumed by quoting certain verses out of context?

http://www.biscuithands.com
yes, good and bad go to heaven when they die.
in fact we know that the righteous dead actually leave heaven with Christ when He comes at His 2nd Coming.
They are brought here to earth when He comes, and raised here (the resurrection). see 1Thes4:13-16
so, since they leave heaven with Christ at His 2nd Coming, they are obviously in heaven, to leave from it.

Since what I am saying is so far from what you have always believed, I can see why you assume that I am committing a hermeneutical fallacy.
When I speak of learning greek, I don't mean checking the definitions of certain words in a greek dictionary and then selecting the definition I like. No, what I am talking about is spending years in studying the greek language everyday to become fluent. I will have been at this for 3 years in December, and I plan to continue.

You and I disagree, but I think it is premature for you to assume it is because I am using the "selective use fallacy" or some other fallacy.
