If you study 1st century Jewish culture, it would seem the guy's "dead" father was not dead yet. He was waiting for him to die, and THEN he would come follow the Lord.

Translations are based upon extant documents in Greek (for the NT) and their understanding of common usage of Greek. But even then, there is theological bias that determines the choice of words used for the English. Dr. A. Nyland took the approach of using more Greek documents of that era to translate her version of the New Testament entitled, "The Source New Testament." But I am not saying her translation is superior. For the understanding of the Bible comes by the Spirit, not the letter.

Indeed. That is why most proper translations utilize a variety of translators from differing doctrinal backgrounds to minimize the doctrinal coloring.
