Where I'm from, not many women wear head-coverings. Dressing that way will draw more attention to yourself... which kind of defeats the purpose IMO, if you're trying to be modest. When I see a woman with her head covered, I presume that she's from a different country or culture, which is fine with me. I don't mind either way.

Now you've just brought up a debate that goes on amongst headcovering women. While the covering can be used for modesty and is often right on the heals of conversation on modesty, it's primary purpose is not modesty- it's submission. But then some will say it's a submission to modesty and the debate goes on. I believe modesty is actually a secondary purpose for it, but just as important. For any sisters out there who may want to practice this tradition or who just want to know what it's like, I totally recommend it but know two things:

1. You will get lot's of questions, so be prepared!
2. If you use shawl/Persian style veils, you will be mistaken for Muslims, even by Muslims. Just explain.

For those of ya'll who don't know yet, I'm one of them headcovering Christians. Have been all my life and never really started to think about how not so common it is amongst Christians until the issues with the Muslim hijab have making head lines. So, I wanna know what would you think if you see a lady, a Christian lady, wearing a covering (also known as "veiling") in your church or just out and about? What would you think or assume about her? Do you find it weird? Old-fashoned? Cool?
I would think that she's either not from around here or from a different faith visiting. My church has had a couple people with hijabs in it, I assumed they were Muslim and silently prayed for them. My church also has a pretty large international community, so we get Christians from all over the world. Sometimes you see them dressed more or less like they would be in their native countries.

I have no problem with anyone who wants to cover their head with a cloth, hat, or some other covering. Folks at my church wear hats in the sanctuary, and no one throws a coniption fit because we all know that it's neither a sign of respect or disrespect to anyone or anything. On the flipside of the same coin, when I go to my parents' church, if I forget to take my hat off and someone reminds me that it is their custom, I'm happy to remove it.

As far as a chick wearing a headcovering, it wouldn't effect me, so long as she didn't try to tell me what coverings I could and could not have. I have lost friends over this and other issues, and it boils down to the fact that they tried to claim I was a sinner by wearing a hat in church at all.

We have talked about covering, now what about modesty? THoughts opinions?

If you mean as far as clothing I think what you don't see sparks more curiosity. I think a woman in a professional suit is far better looking than a woman in a mini skirt and crop-top.

Not to mention I think simple self esteem plays a role here. I can feel absolutely as desireable in jeans and a sweater as I can in a skimpy outfit.

I'm curious to know what the men think here. Do you really want a woman who is showing her goods to the world or one who reserves herself for someone special? A woman with enough self confidence not to need reassurance and get her self worth from a group of guys cat-calling and staring? Or do you "like your women just a little on the trashy side?":D

Another question I have that headcovering often pertains to is modesty. Guys and gals: do you find women dressing modesty to be a value or not that big of a deal? What's your experiences with it?

To the guys: How would a chick that practiced headcovering and/or modesty rate with you?
To the girls: Have you ever or would you ever consider headcovering or being more modest?

DarkNLovely, The first time I saw a Christian lady wearing a headcovering I found it fascinating. I wondered the story behind doing so. I thought maybe a special event was involved. I thought there must be extra seriousness or dedication involved. I think it's unique, brave, humble. Yes, it's old fashioned overall, but to wear one today almost has a rebelliousness to it.

For sure dressing modestly is a value and a virtue, but it's not in high practice today.

I have considered headcovering as well as the concept of extra modesty. I finally gave it a try this year.
