*no debating whether the covering is hair or a piece of cloth as it pertains to 1 Corinthians chapter 11! It violates the no debate rule! The question pertains to your perception of women who do believe it's a piece of cloth! :preach:

I had a thread similiar to this sometime ago but I don't know where the heck it went! :D

For those of ya'll who don't know yet, I'm one of them headcovering Christians. Have been all my life and never really started to think about how not so common it is amongst Christians until the issues with the Muslim hijab have making head lines. So, I wanna know what would you think if you see a lady, a Christian lady, wearing a covering (also known as "veiling") in your church or just out and about? What would you think or assume about her? Do you find it weird? Old-fashoned? Cool? :crosseo:

Another question I have that headcovering often pertains to is modesty. Guys and gals: do you find women dressing modesty to be a value or not that big of a deal? What's your experiences with it?

To the guys: How would a chick that practiced headcovering and/or modesty rate with you?
To the girls: Have you ever or would you ever consider headcovering or being more modest?

Feel free to post any vids or pictures you find interesting that may pertain to any of this and ask any questions of your own.

This is one of my faves! It's Christian sisters in India, who always cover when they are in church or praying!

I'd be able to answer if I knew where the belief came from to begin with. Is it an Old Testament commandment somewhere, or just the interpretation of the Corinthians verse you mentioned...or something else?

Educate us a little, please!

If it's just in church I could care less--when I'm at church, I don't pay much attention to what people are wearing. Outside of church, I would think that it looks weird and old-fashioned and probably indicates that someone is fresh off the boat from a foreign country or is of a non-Christian religion.

I wouldn't really think anything of it in church, but outside of church I would probably assume they were Muslim. I wouldn't think anything negative of them (thinking that they are Muslim is not a negative thing with me). I would just think, "Hmmm, that's interesting" and that's it.

Ok. Heres ssomething I found.

http://www.biblicalresearchreports.com/headcovering-today.php

What I was taught coming up is that women cover when they pray and to do so at all times is a choice, based on 1 Cor. 11 which is New Testament. I have relatives that have covered at all times though, and I not to long ago begin to do so. Because of the spiritual principles attached to it, we elieve that it is a universal commandement and transends time or culture, just to give you a better idea as to the way.

I saw some people talk about maybe assuming the woman was Muslim, just to give you some examples. I usually wear these styles of coverings which are for the most part unnacceptable for Muslim women.

I like to see it in church. Something about it looks respectful.

May I ask what type of church you go to? I go to a non-denom and it's rare. My mom went today and for the first time saw someone else besides me who did.

Oh that's different than what I was thinking. I saw the pic in the OP and thought you meant a head covering like the Indian women were wearing. Based on the pics in post #9, I would just think that what you were wearing on your head (a hat, scarf, etc) was just your fashion style. I would think that you had a great sense of style with those hats in post #9 (I don't want to quote a long quote of pics).

That's an intriguing question. My gut reaction is that it's a cultural thing, like braiding the hair, and not for today. (what I've been taught is that hair braids then were a calling card of sorts for prostitutes, so Paul's meaning isn't "don't braid your hair" it's "don't dress like a ho") However, there's no way on earth I could defend that opinion with respect to head covering, not having studied it.

I generally won't wear that style unless I'm in church. Even then, mine aren't that big. Just Persian style as I like to call it. Like this, I guess.

It is mostly women older than 60 who wear headcoverings in my church.

I think it is a cultural thing, remember that people then lived in a different setting then people now. For example, now slavery and polygamy are just flat wrong, while back then they were allowed (but it is obvious to me that the Bible doesn't support their practice).

In the Orthodox church it's still very common for women to wear head covering. I personally don't have an opinion one way or another.

Personally I believe modesty to be a very good thing, something that is sorely lacking in our society. I personally find it very attractive, in a different sort of way.

headcoverings... as a fashion, they're actually pretty cool, but I don't personally hold to the conviction of wearing head coverings. And neither do I hold anything against women who choose to wear them. So long as they don't have that holier than thou attitude i've noticed some of them tend to have towards women who choose not to wear a head covering, its cool.

I like women who wear funky hats/scarves. Seeing the ones in the pics, it wouldn't occur to me that they were being worn for religious reasons. As imperialphantom mentioned, something super conservative would tend to make me think the person wearing it was also that way. Scarves in particular can look cool IMO.
