• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Has this gone too far?

Dittos, Mary. I'm not a perfect guy and I drop a bomb once in a while, but taking the Lord's name in vain doesn't ever happen....pet peave here too

Really???? Was that necessary?

You know, four-letter words don't really bother me too much, but to see our Lord's name taken in vain, in this forum, really stuns me.

These chicks are incarcerated for speaking their mind. How many people in the U.S. are long-term incarcerated for their opinions?
No, they are incarcerated for hooliganism. As gracefullamb has said, the same thing in the US would likely be called disorderly conduct, with a potential punishment of possibly up to two years in jaol, probation, community service, and/or a fine of up to $3,000. Not quite the same as the possible 7 years in the Russian system, but far from nothing at all.

Pretending it is "only" about what they said is just plain dishonest.

Excuse me? 1000-3000$ fee?
What about the atheist buss campaign?
They weren't punished in any way. And what they did was pretty rediculous and insulting!
Yet these guys didn't do anything at all and they have to pay fees or go to jail for 5 months?
Just for protesting?
[Edited out BY Protoevangel]

I have asked you before not to use the Lord's name in vain here. If I see it again, I will just report you.

This is not acceptable.

When I read the first half of her letter, it says they played in subway stations and on the roof of some place, and all around without any arrests, I'm wondering if it's because it was done in the Church, which was, of course, not the place to do that, and yes, not respectful. Why weren't they arrested for hooliganism (which it does say was the reason on the link) before this at the other places they were? Or maybe they were, but I don't recall reading her letter saying they were.

Perhaps there were no public complaints. Perhaps prosecutors finally just had enough.

I don't "know", I'm just speculating, but I am sure that doing this in front of the Altar of the church caused a number of complaints, and was the cause of the initial arrest and charges. Their history of doing the same in other places, and escalation as a publicity stunt won't play in their favor... But like I said, I am hoping the court will go very easy on them.

I am deeply sorry. I've edited my post.

It's just that in greek, using the name of the Lord while shocked or stunned , isn't considered a curse (On the other hand it shows that you are faithful) and most if not all people in Greece are OK with that. I guess this creates some misunderstandings.

Again I apologise.

Yeah. I don't know all the details of exactly what they did in the Church, and I'd like to know what they sang - the lyrics. I don't know why. Just curious or nosy or something.

I'd be interested too... But we have enough injustice in our own judicial system, that I'd never be able to learn the details of them all.

Like the 67 medical marijuana patients either currently in prison or on trial in California for using the medicine their doctor had recommended? What violent and horrific criminals we incarcerate in the US!

How many people in the U.S. are long-term incarcerated for their opinions? My state is a good example of prisons out of control. But if you look at most of these dirtbags filling our state prisons, they're gang-bangers, drug-dealers, killers, armed robbers, child molestors, fraud, grand theft auto, etc. They deserve to be in there. Americans aren't guilty of incarcerating the innocent as much as they're guilty of having a crime-infested culture. We can criticize Russia for stuff like this, but we certainly can't claim to have the corner on virtuous citizenry! Our country is the most violent culture on Earth it seems. But we don't jail punk bands for the most part! :p

It does seem that some of the ways those punk bands were labeled can (and will) occur in the future. The U.S President recently signed an Anti-Free Speech Bill into Law not too long ago, under the claim that people could recieve serious jail time if the Secret Service was present in an area (regardless of whether people realized it or not).

But indeed, our prison systems in the U.S have been far from being beacons of light. There has been a lot of social reform by many in the prison systems (Chuck Colson being one of the greatest, if seeing his organization "Prison Fellowship")...and when it comes to others having faith-based programs in prisons out of the mindset that more God means less crime, they do have a point. But the levels of crime continue in our country. Much of it in direct relation to the media culture portraying imagery that promotes violence/purposelessness. All of that gets even more sticky when seeing the ways that the prison systems in the U.S have been notorious for being corrupt in multiple ways ...paticularly when seeing the history of Debt-Slavery and how many black men were jailed for minor crimes (sometimes false accusations) and creating much of the culture of fatherlessness that damaged many familes-----and even having the effects felt today when seeing a lot of profiling going on (with it being the general case that minorities still recieve harsher sentences than whites for the same crimes) and others are often put in jail without sufficient evidence or having to wait for fair trial for years before being declared guilty. Some weren't able to even have a fair trial due to being poor..and for others, they sometimes had evidence coming out in their favor and still being condemned, the example of Troy Davis being one of the most recent examples since tons of evidence came out later showing his innocence and they executed him anyway.

There are plenty of people who are in the jails due to their own perversion and the violence they walked out---and they need to be LOCKED UP. But it is sad how much of our prison systems have been corrupt and doing things that people never deserved. People in the U.S definately can't critique Russia in what it did to that band in light of our track record.

I'm wondering if Putin is just being like all other politicians in seeing the backlash and the constant news stories spread about this all over the world (for the past couple months, 3/4's of the google Orthodox news alerts have been about this and then when I saw MYSTAGOGY's link on FB, I figured I'd figure out more of what was going on), that he stated his opinion for leniency so that he looked good. I'm cynical of politicians, and not just the ones in this country. ^_^
Perhaps he's really sincere on what he said and isn't concerned with looking good?

I'd like to know exactly what the lyrics to their song were. The name of their band is offensive to me, but I felt compassion for the gal when I read her letter (haven't finished reading the whole thing yet, though).

Aw, Daniel, you couldn't help to bring up one of the issues that you are very passionate about. But, it does kinda fit into the line of the convo, doesn't it? :D

Eh, I think there's a small possibility of that. If he's anything like our politicians, I'd have a hard time believing that. :sorry:
