• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I'm moving in September and the rent is higher.

I said that I would quit if we moved there and we got the new apartment.

I will update this thread with how long I haven't smoked, if I have a relapse and what my body is going through.

Right now is a great time to quit.

So here are my stats:

One day, 13 hours, 13 minutes and 8 seconds.
20 cigarettes not smoked, saving $7.70.
Life saved: 1 hour, 40 minutes.

Feel free to post your quit plan here.

Here is a healing timeline!
  • 20 minutes after quitting: blood pressure drops to a level close to that before the last cigarette. Temperature of hands and feet increases to normal.
  • 8 hours after quitting: carbon monoxide level in the blood drops to normal.
  • 24 hours after quitting: chance of heart attack decreases.
  • 2 weeks to 3 months after quitting: circulation improves; lung function increases up to 30%.
  • 1 to 9 months after quitting: coughing, sinus congestion, fatigue, and shortness of breath decrease; cilia regain normal function in the lungs, increasing the ability to handle mucus, clean the lungs, and reduce infection.
  • 1 year after quitting: excess risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker's.
  • 5 years after quitting: stroke risk is reduced to that of a nonsmoker 5-15 years after quitting.
  • 10 years after quitting: lung cancer death rate about half that of a continuing smoker's; risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and pancreas decrease.
  • 15 years after quitting: risk of coronary heart disease is that of a nonsmoker's.

Two days, 14 hours, 10 minutes and 28 seconds.
33 cigarettes not smoked, saving $12.86.
Life saved: 2 hours, 45 minutes.

Thank you for the encouragement!

The only thing I've been having a hard time with is the mucus buildup in my throat. I've been told my body will adjust and that this is part of the healing process. I'm very surprised that I'm doing so well with this. I had a hard time yesterday when I was waiting for the bus after work and this guy was smoking right next to me. I politely asked him if he could not blow it in my face.

Another thing I've discovered that I have is my sense of smell. Cigarette smoke is really disgusting to me right now.

Well here is my stats as of right now!

One week, 13 hours, 50 minutes and 42 seconds.
98 cigarettes not smoked, saving $37.62.
Life saved: 8 hours, 10 minutes.

Yes they still do that but about 2 months after they came out someone started a business where they made covers for packs. It kind of loss it's effectiveness.

In Halifax but I think 2007 smoking will be banned in ALL public places. Which will be great!

That's awesome! Keep up the good work!

I remember too the mucus build-up and whoever told you over time your body will adjust, they are right! :) I think for me, I didn't even realize that I was no longer coughing, and even I remember thinking one time....hey, my chest doesn't feel tight anymore, when did that happened?? lol

Your doing great! Thanks for checking in, I've been wondering how your doing :)

Thanks for the support! The change in my breathing I think will definately be noticed in the winter. I can already feel it now.

I had another bus stop smoker today. He walked right next to me and lit up. I had to walk away because it's very tempting to bum one and the smell was awful. I have no idea how my boyfriend could be around me!!

Well here's the update for this evening:

One week, one day, 1 hour, 3 minutes and 45 seconds.
104 cigarettes not smoked, saving $39.95.
Life saved: 8 hours, 40 minutes.

Okay so that attempt did not work out. I have talked to my doctor and actually got perscribed Wellburtrin to help me quit. I started them today and she recommended to have my quit date be two weeks after I've started the medication. I also quit drinking today as well.

My quit date is Sunday, September 10, 2006.

Wellburtrin to help

The pills did not do alot for me, but the gum is wonderful and the patches made life bearable the first week.

I am sad to report I had a full blown relapse (Let stress or the devil get to me)
this past weekend. Smoked the entire weekend 1 full pack but am back on the wagon this am. It had been a couple of months, and I was back that quick. I am
firmly convinced that nicotine is as addictive as heroin and the habit is just as bad as the substance. I'm resolved not be beat myself up to bad, (I did that the whole weekend as a puffed away), I'm just picking up and starting over so today is Day One.

So today has been good, I haven't been smoking before work lately so I'm trying to cut it down before September 10th.
I'm also going to stock up alot of veggies and fruit for when I quit. I don't want to feel tired. I also have been going through some lit that I got from the Canadian Cancer Society. They have great books, that you actually fill out.

Good on you. I want to say that I got right the first time but after about the 349 times (give or take a few) I have finally made it to the 6 month mark! I will be praying for all of you - on and off the wagon as I have been there many times myself and if you need some one to talk to just PM me!

God bless, Evie
