Mr. Mayorkas, who has been on the job for roughly 2½ years, has approved 115 hours of additional leave per employee. That includes 45 hours, or more than a full extra week off, in his first year, followed by 48 hours in 2022 and 24 hours so far this year.


Figuring 260,000 department employees and an average hourly pay of about $40 per employee, that means Mr. Mayorkas has doled out at least $1.2 billion in additional taxpayer-funded vacation time. Law enforcement and high cost-of-living locality pay could mean the actual figure is significantly higher.

So you've got a department that's hated by nearly everybody, with an average salary of $80k (ok, but far from amazing), and their boss, who's probably facing growing dissatisfaction and growing retention problems, and who probably can't do anything about their low-ish pay without Congressional approval, instead hands out the discretionary perks he's able to: PTO, amounting to about 6 days/yr.

Maybe that's not normal for government work, but that's pretty normal for the private sector IMO. What the right calls "buying friends", I see as "trying to be a good boss." I think this is a good example of how the right expects all workers' lives to be miserable.
