Daughter informed me that son (who still lives home) has
a girl, and her name is Mary, and he's not mentioned it
to me cos "didn't feel like playing 20 questions".
That was mostly a joke, and imo he didnt tell me
because she's Catholic (I found out later).

I said, "Jay" (not his real name) One question sweety,
not twenty, what church does she go to?
He said St such and such.
I said, "what the @#$% were you thinking".
(Subtle and supportive wasnt i?)

He said, well she goes to "insert name of emergent
church here" sometimes too.

That was yesterday in the AM.
Yes, I know we have to let the kids
make their own choices.
My question is this:
Do I say something?
Is there anything I should,
as a caring parent, say to son?
Is it none of my bi'ness

Or isnt it even an unequal yoking
should it get serious?
(this kid dont date, and is a very
goal oriented person like a "Paul")

Catholics/Protestants etc. What would
you guys do or say in that situation?

Help only please, no judging k?

thanks,
sunlover

THough I disagree with Sunlover...I wonder how many Catholics or Orthodox would jump for joy if one of their children brought home a conservative Bible believing person to marry?

Well, before I met my current husband I was dating a Catholic, and the first thing his mother said to me was "so, when are you converting"? Two weeks later I overheard a conversation between the two of them where she was berating me and calling me "that damned Lutheran", and she meant damned as in damned to hell. She went on to say "you know she's going to hell if she doesn't convert." So they can be just as "closed minded" as anyone.

It was about the same way with my current wife and I before we were married.
Her family was devout Pentecost and my family were mostly RCs. I was more or less an "agnostic" so it was kind of like mixing "oil with water" :D

well since there are many bible believing conservative Catholics and Orthodox I do not see why it would be a problem
if you mean Protestant, then say Protestant, or atleast Reformed. If I replied to your question the way it was it would be like saying Catholics and Orthodox are not Bible believeing or conservative

Maybe I should have been more direct...someone who brings home a person who worships "THE" "WORD of GOD..." and believes in KJO and believes in the LITERAL interpretation of the Bible and believes those in authority have no right to interpret The Bible because individuals are perfectly capable of knowing what it means...

THough I disagree with Sunlover...I wonder how many Catholics or Orthodox would jump for joy if one of their children brought home a conservative Bible believing person to marry?

My middle daughter (of 3) brought home a guy several years ago. We went out to eat. He would not eat PORK. I thought, oh man, what has she gotten into here? Knowing most of the 'cults' my mind was racing...which one, which one...? I knew he wasn't Jewish.

After a little amount of 'grilling' on the pork matter I then discovered that he also would not eat any kind of shellfish or fish without scales.

YIKES...major red alert in the squint household! Intruder alert...intruder alert!

She went with the guy for 5 years. Then got engaged 3 years ago.

I found out over gentle time and even more gentle conversation that he was NOT a fanatic of any sort (except on the above issues.) His parents raised him that way, they are non-denoms, AND are wonderful Godly people who just don't happen to want to eat any of those things out of health concerns AND they think it's biblical NOT to out of health concerns (which details bore me to death and are even a little gory) (even though I am a healthy etter of all of the above) and they are even more conservative than ME...(as if that's possible?) and we agree on almost everything.

He and my daughter are now happily marrieds (this year) and firmly in the squint tradition of household of faith.

whew! bullet past the ear....

catlover, I am sorry if I sounded snarky, this thread kinda does a number on me.
It would not be an issue of being unequaly yoked, both would be Christian, there are some problems that come up when people from differant Christian traditions get married, but I think most of them can be worked out.
Really, I do not know this but I was just thinking, there might be more problems with intermarriage between Catholics and Orthodox then between Catholics and Protestants (I am not saying that either of these unions are "doomed" or anything like that, there just might be some extra concerns)

Interesting. This thread certainly changes my opinion of some people.
I understand, I've been reading some other threads here too,
but I remind myself to be merciful, we're all at different levels
in our walks.

NOT sure what or who your comment was referring to..,
but, for my friends here who may have been offended
by anything that I have said:

I am JUSt as opposed to my son being involved with someone in the
emergent church as to have become involved w someone in the CC.
I'm not at all in 'agreement' with those doctrines, and so why WOULD
I be joyous at such an union?

Some of the remarks have been... let's say "silly".

I was raised Catholic in a predominately Calvinist community,
and so, happen to know first hand that it's like oil and water.
And everyone who spends ANY amount of time in GT should
be well aware of that as well.

I wanted to make that clear, because there are some folks here
that I love very much, and I would not want to offend them.

  ;)

Wow.
I have 3 and they keep me hopping.
How many of them still live with you?

I am glad that things are going well with your son.
Thank you CMO3!
I bet they do! I remember when I had my third baby... it went
from fun to ... WOW. I told my doctor that I felt like I'd now
become a REAL member of the mommy club. That third was
indeed a kicker.
I have 5 at home, and one who is mostly out but not sure (college).
And my daughter bought the house next door to me, which is WAY
cool.

In the illustrious words of the Red Hot Chili Peppers:

Catholic school girls rule!
Cant disagree with that, since my mom was one... and I begged
like nuts myself to be enrolled in an all girl Cath school.
This girl is very nice! I just was worried about the mix at first.

LOL way to throw us in with that crowd (J/K)

Do you mind if I ask you something? are you and your son now Calvinist Christians?
I dunno, on GT you hear so much about the Catholic/Protestant fighting but I think Calvinism/Arminianism (with the Catholics and Orthodox not being Arminian but still closer to them then the Calvinist) is really the deepest split in Christianity, it is just not as apparant because there are a lot of denominations on either side and the "battle lines" are not as clear

Uh oh! I am really not batting well with you here lol.
I dont want to disparage ANYone, we all have different
ideas, and heck, who KNOWs who's 'right' or 'wrong'.
One day we will. (I know you're teasing me btw)
Do you mind if I ask you something? are you and your son now Calvinist Christians?
I think my oldest leans toward Arminian ( I SO hate these labels, but
they're needed for clarity here)
Next is daughter,... probably Arminianish too.
Next son, very calvinist. (hmm, is that why I dont see him much?)
Then this "dating the catholic girl" son ;)... gosh, I have no idea
which way he rolls.
Next son down is still forming his opinions.
Three little ones attend two different Calvinist churches
in the weekdays and one arminian church on Sunday,
plus MY church on sunday. Go ahead and say it rham.
:p

I agree.
And it's silly , all of it, but it's still fun to discuss.

Oh, I almost forgot about me.
Guess you'll have to be the judge of that,
you know pretty much how I roll.
:D

I dunno the hole "mix like oil and water" i just don't see that.
I have seen Catholics and Methodist work together
really anybody from the Anglican tradition (Naz, Weslyian, CoE) we seem to get along with ok, I mean it can be a little friction from people on both sides, rude or untrusting, that is not good, but it is not like there are two totaly seperate systems, we are all Christian
oh and the joke about being thrown into the same group as the "emergant church" well that was just a joke, i have no fondness for them, but I do not see them as a big problem, it looks like a fad that will die out in a few centuries at most, really, I do not see the movement lasting more then 200 years

You have a good point there.
But ... the kids that I went to school with werent methodist
or lutheran or anglican... they were reformed. They actually
told me on the playground that I worshipped idols. I was in
third and fourth grade! So i can only imagine what their parents
thought.
AND, my mother too, the kindest woman who ever walked this
earth , was catholic and she was sort of like them in that she
would not allow me to do anything that wasnt 'catholic'.
No VBS's , I had to have a "Catholic" catechism book at AWANA,
etc. And we did make fun of the neighbors who wouldnt mow the
lawn on Sunday, and my parents DID sort of sit on the porch
drinking beer on Sunday

Funny thing is, I still live in that sort of environment, actually,
where I live is even more 'Reformed".

And as you know, I'm neither one or the other.
But i agree that sometimes it seems we speak
different languages.

oh and the joke about being thrown into the same group as the "emergant church" well that was just a joke, i have no fondness for them, but I do not see them as a big problem, it looks like a fad that will die out in a few centuries at most, really, I do not see the movement lasting more then 200 years
Yeah, I think I tend to be an extremist in most areas.. trying to
overcome that nasty bit and be more balanced.

I know you were joking Rham. You dont have an evil bone in your body.
