God is omnipotent. Why did he rest on the 7th day of creation?

God's rest isn't about a day. It is eternal rest for those of faith.
Deuteronomy 8:2
God tests people to know what is in their heart and whether they will keep His commandments.

Sabbath day rest was created by Him for mankind ... for rest with Him .... it's a test of love and recognizing Him as the creator of all things. Kept out of love and for no other reasons.

“If you love me, keep my commandments” John 14:15:

Christ Himself said: "If you want to enter into life, keep the commandments" (Matt. 19:17)

Adam and Eve were tested in the garden ... not to eat from the tree (sounds simple don't it?) ... they chose to be disobedient. A simple test of obedience and what happened there? They lost dominion over the earth and eternal life. Thankfully God knew this and provided the way back to Him .... through Christ .... Jesus kept the 7th day Sabbath .... even in HIs death He rested in the tomb.

  • Exodus 20:8: “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God”
I find it totally illogical for people to believe they can ignore the 4th commandment but then on the other hand say the other commandments should be kept.

God's sign, the Sabbath, represents His holy power to rule as Creator and Savior. Revelation 7:1–3 says it will be written upon the foreheads (minds—Hebrews 10:16) of His people. It will signify that they are owned by Him and have His character.

The Sabbath is a distinguishing sign of God's last-day people, who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.

In the Bible, Revelation 14:12 states, "Here is the patience of the saints: here are *they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus". This verse means that God's people should endure persecution with patience while obeying God's commands and maintaining the faith of Jesus. *Which commandments? Keeping the commandments is the faith of Jesus.

If Jesus had not kept the 4th He would have sinned (transgression of the law) ... we should always follow the lamb wherever He goes.

Psalm 121 talks of a God Who doesn't slumber or sleep:

“3 He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, He who keeps Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep.” (Ps 121:3-4 NKJV)

Also, the words of Elijah to the prophets of Baal imply that the true God does not sleep:

“And so it was, at noon, that Elijah mocked them and said, "Cry aloud, for he [is] a god; either he is meditating, or he is busy, or he is on a journey, [or] perhaps he is sleeping and must be awakened."” (1Ki 18:27 NKJV)
Gen 2:2-3 NKJV
And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.
Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.

Why do they translate it as "rest"?

The temple inauguration view (John Walton):

In the ANE culture, the 7 days of creation were supposed to evoke the temple inauguration. And on the "perfect" day, the 7th day, God entered the temple of the universe to rest in there.

The rest does not mean inactivity, it means to finish the creative work and to move in, to the temple, to rule from it.

The main letter is Shin, שׁ (Shin): Root of many words related to rest or cessation. It's often associated with words and concepts related to peace and wholeness, like "Shalom" (שלום), meaning peace. In Jewish tradition, Shin stands for one of the names of God, "Shaddai" (שדי) often translated as "Almighty" or "All-Powerful."

So one day a week we are to be in peace or harmony with God. There are actually very few jobs that honor God. This was the theme of the book: "What would God do". To ask what Jesus would do or how we can live a life that would honor him. For me I would not want to work in a store that sold alcohol or cigarettes' or other harmful things. I do not think that honors God to be a part of people harming themselves like that.

A lot of people think they can lie, cheat and steal all week long as long as they honor God one day a week.

We still have dominion. That was given to mankind before Adam and Eve in Eden.
No we don't ...

At his creation, Adam was placed in dominion over the earth. But by yielding to temptation, he was brought under the power of Satan, and the dominion which he held passed to his conqueror. Thus Satan became 'the god of this world. ' He had usurped that dominion over the earth which had been originally given to Adam.

The one who is in dominion is the Lord. The Lord God omnipotent reigns, and the Lord Christ reigns over this world right now. His kingdom may not be of this world, but it certainly includes this world, and Jesus has all authority over heaven and earth. He has not yet fully executed all His plans yet ... but they most certainly come to pass (restoration of all things)

Through the Fall we as humans lost much. We have lost the kind of dominion that our first parents had in Eden before the fall. Christ came in order to restore to us what we lost.

Matthew 28:18

King James Bible
And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

The world belongs to God, both by Creation and by Redemption. But we mustn’t forget, either, the reality of Satan, the reality of the great controversy, and the reality of Satan’s attempt to wrest control over all that he possibly can. Even though, after the Cross, his defeat was made certain, he’s not going down quietly or gently. His wrath and destructive power, though limited to a degree by God in ways that we certainly don’t understand now, must never be underestimated. We mustn’t forget, either, that however often issues may come to us the ultimate battle boils down to only two forces: Christ and Satan. There is no middle ground. And, as we know, so much of this world falls under the banner of the wrong side (2 Corinthians 4:4 Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don't believe.. The world is damaged because of the works of satan and God permits it to varying degrees many of which we don't understand and/or are not privy to.

We will one day rule with Jesus and once again have dominion over the earth through Him.
