  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I honestly do not know. However, it seems if someone has a table heaped with food, and they are eating all of it, while outside are starving people, I'd call that "gluttony" or at least greed.
Yea, if you have a huge feast every day, that's gotta be gluttony. But even Jesus had feasts once in a while, so how much feasting is considered gluttony?

Gluttony isn't just about eating. Although that is what most of us associated with. Gluttony is basically a grosse over abundance way over the needs of a person. Whether eating or accumulating material things
Alright, but how does one determine how much is too much?

IMO, if you order a six dollar burger combo at Carls Jr. (for example) and while eating the fries your body is telling you that you're full, but you keep eating, then you're committing gluttony (in terms of food).
As said earlier, you can be a glutton with other possessions (ie, shoes, comp games, music, etc.) when you start consuming (buying) those things MUCH more than you need.

Let's remember that gluttony can be more than just food. A gluttoness could be someone who plays poker all the time and never gives Christ his time. A gluttoness could be someone who surfs the 'Net all the time during work and never gives his employer time... :p

At the end of the day, one must ask his/herself just how much of a certain thing has precedence over our Lord. If we play poker every night from 9PM-12PM for five days, yet we've prayed once or twice in that time period (not counting morning prayers) or have only read our Bible or other Holy literature once during that time period, then I'd say we're not only being spiritually slothful, but that slothfullness is a byproduct of gluttony (from another substance that is not Godly)...

anything outside 3 meals a day is gluttony.
Actually, that's not true at all.

Any fitness guru will tell you that the three meals a day mantra is one of the leading factors of why people are actually fat. Aside from the fact that most Americans just eat poorly.

Eating less actually makes you fatter.

If you eat five to six small, low-carb, moderate protein meals a day, spaced 2½ hours apart, you will actually lose weight because of the benefit of an increased metabolism.

...and that's the key -- upping your metabolism.

After watching the movie "Super Size Me", I'm thinking that eating McDonalds, when you have healthier choices, is gluttony.

Do you know that even eating a McDonald's salad (if you put ranch dressing on it) will give you 51 grams of fat? 51 grams! That's more fat than a Big Mac.

See, this is something that bothers me. There are so many health experts out there telling you that you have to eat so many servings of vegetables, fruit, bread, meat, ect. I can't speak for everybody here, but if I ate what was recommended, my daily consumption of food would likely double.

I eat two small to average sized meals a day, and I can tell you that I don't consume enough of what is recommended for a healthy diet. I just have a hard time spending a lot of money to get my daily nutrients when there are millions in this world that are starving.

McDonalds can hardly be BLAMED for gluttony - they merely provide the stuff people use to gluttonize.

Easy answer to that one - don't go to McDonalds, eat real food at home. Its cheaper, healthier, nicer.... in fact I cant think of any reason whatsoever why people would want to eat at McDonalds.

Except maybe a child, because they get a toy with their happy meal :)

If you re-read my post, you'll see that I didn't blame McDonalds. I said "eating at McDonalds". That implies that the guilt lies with the eater. Not the supplier.

Though, suppliers do share some of the guilt IMO. Just as makers of the RU-486 pill share guilt along with those who take the pill.

Do grocery stores share some of the guilt with those who are gluttonous? What about farmers?

People have got to eat to live. Nobody needs the pill.
