  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

A very Christian sentiment.
It is of interest to note that Pell established the first program (1996) to address sexual abuse within the Church which would be funded by but operate independently of the Archdiocese.
Which just makes it outright creepy with what's gone on/going on .

The News & Current Events forum is for all members to discuss newsworthy events that are currently taking place in the world. All news and current events must be documented or validated with a link to a credible online news source in the original post (OP).

Political and policy discussions should take place in the Politics forums as there is a focused area just for that topic available.

Obviously the jury considered what they heard sufficient to find Pell guilty. However, this case still remains unusual because it hangs on belief rather than substantial evidence.

“As The Age’s crime reporter John Silvester has put it, the Court of Appeal has to consider whether a verdict is safe in a case where the defendant “was found guilty beyond reasonable doubt on the uncorroborated evidence of one witness, without forensic evidence, a pattern of behaviour or a confession.”” (Quoted in The Australian, 16 March 2019). I would add demonstrated improbability of opportunity.

When one side characterizes discussion of the case as the disgusting behaviour of “kicking puppies”, and the other side sees it as a “lynch mob mentality”, it is clear feelings are running pretty high, so I am bowing out of this debate … at least until it reignites in June.

I think all has been said.
Charged as guilty.
Pell is now on the sex offenders list.
Only thing left is for the appeal to be over and done with.

I fervently pray that any sex abuse victims will find healing and faith through Jesus our precious Lord.:prayer:

There's a secure ward in St. Vincent's which is set up for prisoners (same level of care as the public system). My dad used to be a prison warden, so I learned about how these things are handled from him.

I read somewhere in the news earlier today that there's been an influenza outbreak in Victoria's prison and 11 men have been hospitalised.

Technically, his lawyers have applied for leave to appeal; it's not automatic that the High Court will hear it. From what I've been reading, only about 10% of such applications are granted.

We should have an answer on whether or not they'll hear it by the end of the year.

Cardinal Pell's lawyers have lodged an appeal with the High Court, which is a far as it can go.

George Pell's lawyers look to appeal judges' 2-1 split for High Court bid to have convictions quashed

I'll say this much - it's far from cut and dried in my opinion.
Your opinion is shared by a great many Australians whether they are Catholic or even religious.

Pell's team are arguing "erroneous judicial method" which if accepted will ensure the case proceeds to the High Court.’
