Santa Fe officials are providing further details into the "suspicious" deaths of legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa.

After the couple's bodies were discovered on Wednesday, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza and Santa Fe's fire chief Brian Moya shared more information about the ongoing investigation and said that Hackman and Arakawa could have been dead "up to a couple of weeks."

"Just based on their bodies and other evidence on the body, it appears several days and possibly up to a couple weeks," Sheriff Mendoza told the "Today" Show when asked when the deaths could have occurred.

They had a significant update today. Gene was suffering from heart disease & Alzheimers & apparently unaware that his wife had passed. She was cited as having the deadly Hanta virus which is a virus associated with the excrement of rats/mice. It leads to pulmonary failure.

Incredibly sad ending. Hackman was basically starving before he died.

Horrible! He probably wasn’t able to chew or swallow if his Alzheimer’s was too advanced:(

He had advanced Alzheimers but I don’t think it was the end stages yet.
They're not saying he died from the Alzheimers. They're saying he died from his pulmonary condition...the Alzheimers contributed to his not being able to help himself or get help.

That’s right. He was in the house at least a week with his dead wife.

People with Alzheimer's often lose the will to eat in more advanced stages, and there's a general medical ethics consensus that people in late state Alzheimer's disease should not be force fed.

Hanta virus may be a real possibility. It's rare in the US that it kills anyone, but it exists in the southwest. It's an Ebola-like virus that can be very dangerous.

Increasingly this is a problem in developed nations. People live lonely, isolated lives... sometimes in cities, dying alone and their bodies just decompose. Then they have to send in cleanup teams to deal with what is often a gruesome mess.

A friend of ours at church died last year. They didn't find her until nearly two weeks after she died. It was upsetting to find out. People need to check in on each other more, and maybe we shouldn't be so socially isolated. Our social structures don't deal with the realities of modern aging very well. And many people resist nursing home care, often for very good reasons.

Absolutely!

My grandmother, who died in 2004, had Alzheimer's and spent the last year of her life in a nursing home.

My other grandmother, who died in 2016, hated being in a nursing home and wanted to be independent as possible.

It must be very hard on the elderly to lose all their independence.
