As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Anyone else suffering with this?

I have been on a PPI medicine (proton pump inhibitor like Prevacid, prilosec, nexium) for about 10 years. Lately, even the Nexium isn't doing the job. Mine strikes most often during the wee hours of the morning when my stomach is completely empty so I tend to take my meds late (around 10 P.m.) But of course, recent stresses at work may have aggravated the problem so it's not working like it was. And of course, my husband is working later so I cook later and then crash into the recliner and fall asleep earlier some nights and I KNOW that doesn't do my digestion any good. Even sleeping more upright in the recliner hasn't helped.

But in any case, I was just wondering if any of your who have GERD, have these cycles where the drugs just don't do the job all that well.

How I feel for you. I have to take Omerprazole for the same condition and I also have an hiatus hernia. My meds aren't working at all well. I am so uncomfortable everytime I eat or drink anything.

My doctor suggested that we raise the top end of the bed but hubby hasn't got round to doing that yet. I am not sure it would make any difference anyway.

Are you finding certain foods make your condition worse? I find I can't eat anything with a high fat content like chocolate or fries anymoree.

Blessings :)

I've been on Prevacid/prilosec for about 10 years (at first when needed and then every day) and it always worked really well for me unless I got really stressed out. Maybe once a year I'd get a lot of pain from the GERD but that was about it. It's only been recently that I've had more problems. For one thing the insurance company kept taking me off of it to prove I really needed it (sick, huh?) and after the last time, the prevacid wasn't exactly doing it for me. Helped 90% though. Then it got a good bit less effective so they switched me to Nexium. That helped a bit for about 6 months but the last month or so has been awful.

Part of the problem, I think, is that this was a "holiday" season, in that there were a ton of celebrations with friends, coworkers retirements and weddings, and so on, with lots of feasting. The major problems started after one such 'feast' that lasted on and off for a whole day. One party after another. So my stomach never quite got empty and stayed full. I don't know if it was something I ate during these pot-lucks, but oh well. I started getting heartburn about 2 weeks ago (yup right around that feast time) and it has been there on and off for most of the day, nearly every day. This is a major change for me.

They say elevating the head of the bed can help. I usually sleep with lots of pillows to elevate the bed since my husband didn't want to do it either. But he needs it as bad as me. He has asthma. In any case, with the way he snored, I eventually wound up sleeping in the recliner since it is mostly upright. LOL! I bought this thing cuz it was cheap and what a waste of money. I can't let is stay in the full back position because of how my center of gravity is (in other words it's all in my middle). So half the time I sleep almost upright anyway. I am wondering if that isn't contributing to the problem since I get kinda scrunched that way, if you know what I mean. Strike 1. And it sure it's good to get comfortable in that after eating, another culprit I'm sure. I never could eat late. Now, I get home, fix dinner or buy it, eat around 6:30, and crawl into the recliner cuz I'm tired from working all day. Then I get warm and cozy and fall asleep in that chair around 9. Sleep for an hour or so (the kids and hubby don't bother me) and then I get up. This is strike 2. And strike 3 is simply that my heartburn used to be bad (if untreated) around 2 a.m. (empty stomach...I guess it's empty anyway after all that time), but since last summer, I was noticing it more when I woke up rather than at 2 a.m. GOTTA be empty by then. It's one reason I take the drugs later in the evening since it would be wearing off during the worst time of day for me.

Yes, certain foods do get to me. Chocolate is a big culprit though I have some from to time anyway. Fried foods never used to bother me during the day. Only if I ate them late and went to bed early. In fact, up until recently, I could eat just about anything during the day without problems since 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. was the worst time of the 'day' for me.

I have no idea if I have a hiatal hernia but I'm suspecting that is what's causing this problem. I also suspect that when I finally see my specialist, he will also suggest an endoscopy since I've never had one for this (at least not all the way down my throat and into my stomach). Sigh...I'm not looking forward to that.

In essence, I truly sympathize with you. Not much you can do about a hiatal hernia, either. Only work with it, take drugs, and ultimately surgery if bad enough. I fear they wouldn't want to do the surgery on me until I lose weight (that's docs for ya, and they could be right on this :) ) I'm pretty sure my weight isn't helping matters. My weight is redistributing. Right to my middle. That's gotta put pressure where it doesn't belong.

Blessings to you too!

Hi. I am really sorry to read that you have been suffering for so long. My problems showed up on a barium swallow x-ray. Maybe you doctor will order one for you? It is absolutely nothing to worry about at all. I am wondering if I might have to have an endoscopy. I really wouldn't like to have one of those.

Funnily enough, I am finding that I sleep better if I lie flat with just the one pillow. We are all different I suppose. I was quite surprised by this as I too am asthmatic. I was using loads of pillows and gradually slipping down the bed while asleep, when I did manage to get some sleep, that is.

Yes, I am finding out thru' trial and error that there are quite a lot of foods which may me more uncomfortable. I need to lose weight too, and I am trying to follow a low fat diet. I also find that I need to have much smaller portions. Where for example, I used to have cereal and toast for breakfast now I have cereal at breakfast and the toast round about 11 am, otherwise the discomfort is just too much for me. Likewise dinner in the evening, main course and then maybe a light dessert a couple of hours later if at all.

Do you get the pressure in your throat, like there is something stuck in your throat? I get that almost as soon as I eat or drink anything and it stays for hours. It is not only confined to my throat but goes down to be pressure in my sternum (breast bone) too.

I go back to my doctor next week. Hopefully she will be able sort out my meds so that they work more effectively.

Is so good to be able to talk to someone with similar problems. I am sorry you are suffering tho'.

Take Care

Blessings

Yeah, I'm sorry that you have to go through too. it's such a bummer. And I know of a couple of local people whose medicines aren't working like they should and you wonder what the next step is...surgery???

They may do a barium swallow as you say and I'm suspecting the endoscopy as well. Probably the latter will be first on the agenda. I'm not looking forward to either!

I've thought of the low portion size deal but this seems to hit me on a fairly empty stomach more than a full one. In fact, I'm usually okay after I eat except for the last 2 weeks thatis. So I don't know what to do. Now I feel that mild burning almost all the time.

What you are feeling could be something called 'globus'. That is that tight feeling of something like a knot in your throat. It happens when too much acid is being kicked up there. I got that when my health insurance provider told me to get off the Prevacid and try tagamet. I told them it wouldnt work. I was right. And globus was one of the earlier symptoms of that. It was not only very uncomfortable (I switched to eating very soft foods cuz swallowing was painful) but lasted a long time even after they put me back on the Prevacid. I am sincerely hoping the doctor can help you find something to alleviate this symptom. I guess this is also related to that tight feeling below the sternum.

How many meds are you on for this now? I truly hope your doc can help you. I'd be interested in hearing what they have to say...and don't you love how long you have to suffer before they can see you. My doc is affiliated with a large hospital and it took them a month to "squeeze" me in. My problems not only upset my stomach and throat from lack of proper medicine but also messed up my whole digestive tract so my Irritable Bowel Syndrome problems got worse too. I was miserable for about 5 months total.

So all in all I hope and pray that you get the help you need quickly and effectively. Me too...so we can both be smiling again...:D

Rolaids Rolaids Roliads got to bed with 4 in your jaw every night. I use the nexium and 100 rolaids a week. I have done that for years. Be very careful what you eat and drink. You should be able to get a do and don't list from your doctor. Don't bend over or use sweeping motions any more than you just have too. The bending and lifting is very bad on the hernia.

Oh man, that is bummer news!!! I am still trying to figure out why my stomach issues acted up so much only recently. Makes me wonder if I got some sort of 'bug' or stress related thing. Today, I haven't been bad at all. Yesterday I tried to eat earlier than usual, ate a little less, stayed more upright (didn't sit as much to watch TV), and therefore, got my Nexium in early (8:30). I'm not ever sure I have a hiatal hernia. Never had it diagnosed. They gave me Prevacid and that worked fine so they never went far enough to do further testing...however, that was before I had a specialist, who, I'm sure, WILL want to do further testing. But thanks for the advice anyway.

I had a very similar problem, and due to the Low Carbohydrate diet I am on, I have NO problems at all now. My doctor recommended it for me. Its hard to due the first week because you have carb withdrawal, but after that it is easy. I enjoy the food I eat immensly, and my GERD is cured.

That's interesting and I am so pleased you are getting relief now from your symptoms. I am in a lot of discomfort no matter what I eat. I am finding that eating bread makes me very uncomfortable.

Would you mind telling me what you eat now and what you have cut out of your diet?

God Bless

Just had my endoscopy. Not too bad overall. He confirmed signs of acid reflux but no erosions. Found stomach polyps (which I'd never heard of). Said they all looked benign though he did a biopsy of them anyway per protocol just to be safe. And he did liver function tests since I've had "fatty liver disease" for a long time. My brother (which is normal weight for his heigh) and I both have this disease so I guess it's hereditary. Guess the doc just wants to make sure the liver function is okay. And finally, he kept me on the Nexium once a day and told me to take Zantac at night to help aid the Nexium and we'll take it from there, see how that does.

I have also had reflux for 10 plus years, has anyone else either had surgery, or been told to?

I have been told to fot a while way back in 2000 before I got Fibromyalgia, and then again recently as its gotten worse again, and I have episodes where I aspirate into my lungs, causing severe pain, cough, and fever.

I may actually go through with it this time , but I am concerned wit hboth the actual procedure, its effectiveness, as well as undesirable side effects.

Sorry, never had surgery suggested. I think it depends on how bad you have it and if you have hiatal hernia or not.

One dr told me I might need surgery.
I have been a bit naughty and strayed from my diet and not bothered with my meds and now I am suffering. The not bothering with my meds was not intentional, I just didn't remember to take them. I also have memory problems... :(

Oh well, back on the low fat diet and see if I can remember where I put my meds.

Gaviscon sometimes relieves the symptoms but not for long with me.

Does anyone get pain in the oesophagus when drinking anything hot or cold? Coffee or hot drinks are really very painful for me and I don't really like them luke warm.

Blessings

I was on Zantac for a long time at maximum doseage. It wasn't working right so they changed me to Prevacid at
the maximum doseage. It has helped. Another thing they did was to put me on Theophylin. It's a drug for lung disease but it has a stomach calming side effect.
Also with Prevacid, you have to eat for the medicine to work. It won't work if your stomach is empty.

I have seen my doctor and she has changed my meds to Lansoprazole (30mg). I have had a blood test and am trying to follow a low fat diet. I see dr again in 3 weeks. She said I may have to be referred to a specialist.
Better seeing a specialist than ignoring it. :)
