• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I have had GERD for about 20 years. It was pretty much in control until my thyroid messed up and I gained 60 lbs..

It's been pretty bad for the last year or so - I've been living on Tums and Rolaids:sick:, but for the last week, I have been trying apple cider vinegar and it is really helping! You can check it out at www.earthclinic.com

I have been making myself a tea 3x/day with 1Tbl. acv, 1/4 tsp of baking soda, and honey to taste. I've been using a nice mango herbal tea and a nice orange herbal tea, it's quite a nice taste:yum: I can't believe how much better my tummy feels and my breathing seems easier and I just feel better, Yipee!!! Check it out! I hope that it helps you too:)

Oh, for the last 2 nights, I have not had to get up and down a handful of tums in the middle of the night:thumbsup: I think the tea I have just before bed is helping with the night time reflux.

I have been taking ACV now for 2 weeks and I can't believe how much better my tummy feels. I haven't had an antacid in days. I did have to cut our my morning 2 cups of decaf coffee though and replace it with my herbal tea/ acv. I even ate hummus and greek salad with no problems!!!! Yipee!!

How bad was your reflux?

I have heard the vinegar "cure" before, but when I tried it myself, I might as well have been drinking acid.

Mines pretty bad, and I have been told the opening "spinchter" is just gaping open at the top of my stomach, whatever that means.

But if its working for you great.

I had to change from my regular standby of 60 mg of prevacid, to
40 mg of protonix, plus 600 mg of rantidine and I am still having to chew gaviscon by the bottle.
Does anyone know of any other things that help.
aside fron ilting my bed, and not eatling late etc?

I believe she is referring to apple cider vinegar, I had to scroll back myself, as it was originally unclear.

Does medication not controll your symptoms?
And how bad is your barrets?

I was told 7 years ago to have a fundo, but I lost 70 lbs, and my reflux vanished (untill i regained all the weight)
When my reflux returned, it apparently healed enough of my esophagus, that they werent all that worried about barrets, but my esophagael sphincter has been "wide open" the past 3 endoscopys I have had.

MY GERD was pretty bad - it used to wake me up about 3 times a night. I'd have to get up and down a handfull of tums. I used to get major heartburn and I always had that acid sloshing on the back of your throat kind of feeling.

The apple cider vinegar is really quite nice and tolerable in herbal tea. The web site I listed above advises the use of 2 TBL but I just like 1 TBL in my tea, with a little baking soda and some honey, it's really easy to get down. I usually have it first thing in the morning, at noon and after dinner.

I don't drink any coffee, alcohol, and limit my soda intake and I try to stay away from fried foods. Oh, and I like to take some acidophilus a couple of times a week. It seems to help some too.
