Actually, the passage in 2 Peter jumped out at me in Sunday School yesterday when I was turning to look at another passage.

I jotted it down quickly, then brought it home and put it in my software for further reference.

The passage in Psalm 39 was a cross-reference to something that again, jumped out at me.

How bizarre. You do not accept responsibility for finding your own verses in Scripture. They choose themselves and leap towards you, demanding to be noticed.

I wonder what Bible you have? Maybe a pop-up version?

In mine the words stay nicely on the page, until I choose to read them. And even then they are polite and well behaved, and do not leap around anywhere.:)

As the song goes:- My Faith has Found a Resting Place

So, you have no reasons, just song cues.

Q: Why is the US a "Christian nation"?

A: "God did it."

Nope, AV -- not even good, let alone "good enough."
Well:

  1. If the Abrahamic Covenant won't convince you.
  2. If the Mayflower Compact won't convince you.
  3. If our motto won't convince you.
I sure won't convince you.

Now did I go and use a metaphor again?

Shame on me!

I certainly didn't mean to confuse anyone.

What I meant was: I was turning the pages, and these verses came within my field of vision, and I read them, and they made enough of an impression on my psyche, that I chose to write the verse numbers down for future reference here online.

And that stops you guys from wanting Christian Theology out of our schools, while simultaneously spending hours on the Internet asking question after question?

If you want to have Christian theology taught in a religion class that's fine. Just don't teach it in science class.

What would you think if I wanted Evolution Doctrine out of the schools (which I do), yet spent hours online asking question after question?

You can teach creation in schools if we can teach evolution in church!

Well:

  1. If the Abrahamic Covenant won't convince you.
  2. If the Mayflower Compact won't convince you.
  3. If our motto won't convince you.
I sure won't convince you.

The first two have nothing to do with our nation, and the third is traditionally "E Pluribus Unum," which has nothing to do with religion. Moreover, while America still has more protestants than adherents of any other type, the percentage of the nation which is protestant is just now slipping under 50.

Some of the contents are, certainly. And some are sublime. :)

I'm not sure about sublimity, but I'll certainly concede that not all of the contents of the bible are silly or grotesque.

Fair enough. As long as morality is a function of people, not of books. :)

As I said, I'm not one for ascribing thoughts or intentions to inanimate objects, but I can certainly deem a message to be a good one or a bad one (and in this case, a thoroughly inconsistent one).

The hijacking of this thread by one of the biggest creos on this forum is enough to lend creadence to the OP. They'll use the original Hebrew when it suits them but then tell that same Hebrew to "take a hike" when it contradicts their particular brand of Bible. They bastardize scientific definitions and terms and have no understanding of even the most basic scientific principles. They think America is a "Christian Nation" because they have no clue what our forefathers really fought for and believed in, a nation where all are free, no matter what religion, race, or creed. These Christians do a better job at creating atheists than critical thinking and reason ever could.

How about a document that actually has something to do with the founding of this country?

I see allegory, you see metaphor.

Metaphor to me involves much more of a change in imagery; 'the road was a ribbon of moonlight', when it clearly was no such thing. Allegory is finding a meaning other than the literal in a normal word, such as 'neighbour' meaning 'everyone on earth'.
It's not really about perception it's about two distinctly different devices. Neighbour is used as a metaphor for somebody (anybody) who isn't just necessarily the person living next door, and then he used an allegory (parable of the Good Samaritan) to illustrate his point. Two distinct devices for two different purposes.
However, each to his own. I see no point in disputing a difference of perception on this one.

One wonders why you were so adamant about it not being literal then! (although not hyper-literal or whatever guff AV came out with!) No worries though :)

I thought, according to your doctrine, we are all born atheists?

Am I wrong?
