There is a difference between tolerance and acceptance. I can tolerate a neighbor with a vicious dog, I can be tolerant without having the vicious dog, or my neighbor in my child's bedroom.

The difference is subjective.

If you have a cobra in your bed, it does not matter if you tolerate it or accept it. You better have anti-venom handy!

Tolerance is the allowable deviation from a standard. One accepts whatever is within tolerance.

The woman caught in adultery seems to be the standard for Jesus' attitude toward sinners engaged in sinning. I wonder if Jesus was accepting of the woman just as she was, tolerant of her or a mixture of both.

I think it is a pretty relevant topic actually. We live in a culture that expects us to be tolerant of others but really the real feeling is that unless we accept what is happening we are being intolerant.
