I define secular music as music sang by artists who don't want to be called or part of Christianity. Secular music is music that's not meant to glorify God, basically.

Preacher, I'm finished arguing with you. I have attempted to counter your points, and your replies do nothing to reinforce your position. I'll just stop now before I break into insults...

I wasn't talking about one small verse, I was talking about the WHOLE chapeter. You can't take one verse and use it to your case, if it means something completely different when read in the whole context of the chapter, or book.

Grover has already explained that Romans 6 an 12 have nothing to do with music. 6, in particular, deals with sin, and until you can define secular music as sin, it is irrelevant to this discussion.

Romans 12:2
Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will know what God wants you to do, and you will know how good and pleasing and perfect His will really is.

I say this means that I change the way I think about everything and how I respond to it. Obviously it would include turning from one's sinful ways, but sin is usually clearly defined in Scripture. Generally, when something is NOT specifically addressed, Christians are allowed to use their discernment to determine whether or not they should do it.

Here are a few cases music was used in a way other than praise.

1 Samuel 16:14-23 - music played to Saul to soothe him - not to God
1 Kings 1:39-40 - music played in honor of Solomon's coronation - not to God
Number 21:17 - Israelites sang about a well - not God
Song of Songs - goes without saying

There are plenty of christian bands that have the same type of music as sec bands

Ya know Iwas going to say that myself, but I figured Axver would get around to it. Preacher's arguments hold water like a sieve. It's pointless arguing with him.

It is pointless arguing with Preacher b/c he is using scripture while the majority of the people in this thread are posting meaningless comments saying how ridiculous this topic is. I believe that I can listen to some secular music in good conscience because of 1 Corinthians 6:12-20
"12 (20) All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.
13 (21) Food is for the stomach and the stomach is for food, but God will (22) do away with both of them. Yet the body is not for immorality, but (23) for the Lord, and (24) the Lord is for the body.

All things are lawful, but not all are profitable. I don't think it could ever be shown that all secular music is unbeneficial; however, at the same time I doubt that all secular music can be profitable.

The key words in this post was FOR ME. Preachers your missing it every time and it's becoming pointless to argue with you. You have no truth to hold your arguement. The bible is not a hidden book where you must decode it to find out what things are sin and what things are not. If listening to non-Christian music was a sin it would be stated straight foward. I am still clueless as to why people enjoy making up sins that are not even there. Do you have to many things to do? Is this your way of not having to do some of them?

There really isn't any scripture that says we can't listen to secular music, so preacherfrogie's argument is weak and really has no basis . As for listening to secular music i take this verse into consideration

I agree with Jedi Penguins that people enjoy making up sins that aren't there. If any music is uplifting to you in a good way, there is nothing wrong listening to it. iv'e searched the Internet and haven't found much support to say it is a sin to listen to secular music.

Yes and none of the people that say secular music is NOT a sin have used scripture. Yes, I guess myself using scripture doesn't count then, eh
