I have not posted her for some time so I’ll stop by and say Hi.
I live in a small town called Bell Fl, It’s around Gainesville Fl. Moved my Family to this area in Oct 28 1986 from Miami.

I lived in a house where the Miami Dolphin football stadium now stands. I lived in Hialeah, Kendall, and Perrine, My parents build two houses in Davie Fl and I got married in one of them in 1976.

I remember when Flamingo road was a dirt road and it was great news when they paved it. I went to Comstock Elementary School in Miami, went to Hialeah Elementary School, Miami Springs JR High School, & ended in Hialeah High School.

I went to School with Silveo Cardosa {Spelling is wrong) he become Mayor of Hialeah, also went to School with KC from “KC & the Sunshine band”.

My teenage years were spent in Hialeah & Miami Springs, Got married and lived in the Kendall, and Perrine area.

I live in a trailer park about 1 or 2 miles from the new Zoo when it was being built, after they stocked it with Animals I could hear the Lions roar at night some times.

I also use to hang around SouthBeach, this was when it was old run down apartments along the beach.

I remember when it was free to go to the beach on Key Biscayne and the Zoo was there.

also out on Key Biscayne where the swear plant and there was a bunch of small shakes build out there by a Movie Company, they filmed a “Miami Vice” there, “Porky 3” & a commercial for a radio station from Virginia called F,R,O,G,
I had small parts in. I also worked Construction all over Miami mostly gas stations, did major Construction at the “Miami Sea Quarium”.

I use to love the heat, I use to surf up and down the cost of Florida, and also Scuba dived in the Keys.

Did not see real snow till I was 25 and have only seen it 4 or 5 times.
I remember when it snowed in Ft Lauderdale in 1979 or 1980.

I Love Florida my wife and I love the Ocean and the Beaches.

It’s the only place in the US where you can watch the sun rise on the ocean and then drive and watch the same sun set on the ocean.

Very romantic!

I believe you about Miami. Though parts of Orlando are like that too...

Yeah, I went to a Clown Convention for 2 years in a row many years ago, and our hotel was right on a street that had almost bumper-to-bumper traffic practically the entire time we were there. It was not easy to cross that street, and was dangerous. I don't remember the name of the street. Maybe Main St.??

Interesting. I worked down the street from the Zoo from the mid 80's to the early 90's.

I used to go there when I was little. In High School, I used to snorkle, starting at Key Biscayne, swimming over to Viscaya. The last time I went to Key Bisayne was at midnight or later with my girlfriend. It was like something out of a horror movie. Everywhere I looked, there was a rat about every square foot of beach. I had never seen anything like that before or since in my life. I also walked by a young gang, and one guy had a gun and walked toward me, looking at me. I just ignored him and kept walking, praying as I did, and thanks be to God's protection, nothing happened.

That place has become unbelievably expensive! It's not even worth going anymore, for what they charge you.

Do you remember the Serpentarium? When it closed, they used the giant cobra from the roof and put it on the roof of my High School (South Miami).

We spent a couple summers in a cabin in Marathon, and used to go snorkeling every day. That was great!

Welcome love bugs!!!!!!!! Arrgghhhhh they are everywhere!

Oh yeah! I forgot about the love bugs! That's one thing I did NOT like about moving from Miami to Ocala! Didn't have to worry much about cleaning love bugs off my car in Miami. They are terrible here!

Also the pollen is bad here...it falls on everything....your car, etc. Never had that in Miami.

Despite all that, I still like it better here! I'd rather deal with love bugs and pollen any day!

Do you remember the Serpentarium? When it closed, they used the giant cobra from the roof and put it on the roof of my High School (South Miami). Yes I do remember that, it was in the paper and I was driving by when they were taking it down. Do you remember why he closed the serpentarium down? BOY KILLED

The attraction prospered until a tragedy in 1977. A 6-year-old boy fell into a crocodile pit and was killed.

Haast still grows somber when retelling the story: It was a Sunday. People were lining up for a show. Suddenly, he heard screaming and ran toward the commotion.

Haast saw that a boy had fallen into the crocodile pit. Haast jumped down into the pit. By then Cookie, the 12-foot, 2,000-pound crocodile, had the boy in its mouth. ''I hit him over the head, trying to get him to let go.'' Others joined Haast. Cookie broke free and took the boy underwater. ''I knew it was over then.'' Haast calls it one of the lowest points in his life. The night of the accident, he took his Luger, walked out to the pit and shot Cookie in the head. It was buried on the grounds. The boy's family never sued, accepting only the maximum insurance payment, Haast said.

I watched them film "Miami Vice" once, with Don Johnson sitting in a fancy car, looking smug.

He was smug! When I worked on the filming of the Miami Vice out on Key Biscayne it took about 10hr of filming for that day. they catered food for lunch, a crew come in and set up about 15 or 20 round tables, you got in line and got your plate and sat at a table. [Lamb chops is what they served that day] Anyway! I did not know anyone so I went to the last table and sat by myself. When everyone had got there food and was eating all the tables had people sitting at them and I was still by myself. When out of there motor home/ dressing room come Don Johnson & his side kick Philip Michael Thomasand the only table that still had seats open was the one I was sitting at. So! I ate lunch with the stars of Miami Vice, LOL! anyway Don Johnson didn’t say too much and did come across as smug. Michael Thomas on the other hand was rathe down to earth and was a nice guy.

Interesting. I worked down the street from the Zoo from the mid 80's to the early 90's.
Where did you work at?

Do you remember “County walk” housing development close to the Zoo! I worked as a carpenter for one week in that development and quit because they were cutting corners to save money and was in a big hurry to finish. When Hurricane Andrew hit we went down south the next day to bring supplies to family.
I could not believe what that place looked liked.

Yes, I do remember that. From what I heard, the dad sat his son up on the edge, and the croc wasn't moving, looking like it was asleep. The boy (and maybe the dad too) started throwing rocks at the croc to wake it up. While throwing, the boy lost his balance and fell in. The father immediately jumped in to save the boy, but was unsuccessful.

Data Access Corporation. I think the name of the area was Deerwood Industrial Park, if I remember correctly. Data Access was destroyed in Hurricane Andrew, but after a year of having their employees temporarily work in North Miami, they rebuilt it and moved back. I think its still there, and they also have a website.

Torah said:

Yes, I remember Country Walk very well, and used to drive past it. I even knew someone who used to live there.

Torah said:

Yeah, it was unbelievable. The second floor of Data Access was gone, and the wall had fallen on one employee's Corvette, crushing it. There was a gym close by at the time, in a warehouse, and one of the owners was in the gym at the time, leaning against a concrete wall. He said the wall began to bulge, and he ran just before the wall exploded. My sister, who lived in Cutler Ridge at the time, stayed at my mom's house in SW Miami during the hurricane, and when she drove down to inspect her house after the hurricane, she drove back in tears because she could not find her house, since all the landmarks and signs were gone. I used to snorkel at a lake in the Cutler Ridge area, since I knew people who lived in the complex, and I remember seeing barracuda in the fresh-water lake that had been blown in from the ocean; that was weird, and I was surprised that they were surviving.

Thanks for that 2nd link! I'm going to send that link to some friends. That's a great site! I only glanced at it so far, but I noticed a pic of Skipper Chuck! I was on the Skipper Chuck show twice! LOL!

Yeah, once you hit that Dade County Line, you're in another country! And there is a noticeable difference in the traffic!

Yeah, and if you wait too long, the acid from those bugs eats the paint on your car! And the longer you wait, the harder they are to clean off! I HATE those things!

I grew up in SW Miami (attended Emerson Elementary, West Miami Jr. High, South Miami Sr. High, Miami Dade College...also University of North Florida in Jacksonville for 1 term, and Bob Jones University in South Carolina for 2 years), but moved away from Miami 5 years ago. Lived in Dunnellon for 1 1/2 years, and now have lived in Ocala for the past 3 1/2 years. I am SOOOOOOOOOOO glad I moved out of Miami!
I'm nearby in Inverness.

Sold my "summer home" in NJ this year so now I'm a full time Floridian. I LOVE FLORIDA!

What you're describing sounds like International Drive to me. Does that ring a bell? (Might be the same as Orange Ave - not sure)
