It may sound weird but I finally came to the realization that this show would have been better without Joss Wheedon. I came to this conclusion basically after hearing a lot from the actors directors etc. through commentaries and what not, and Joss Wheedon is just too full of himself to admit that he is wrong. Ever. I still regret listening to the commentary for "Objects in Space;" never before have I heard so much unabashed egotistical ramblings. The other problems is that he has a habit of writing bad lines (probably because he can't seperate his good from his bad); and that he turns River into a walking existentialist showpiece, which got annoying for me. I still have to wonder how much of the show's problems were due to Fox's annoyance with Joss's obssession with making the series wide screen. Don't get me wrong, Joss Wheedon has talent, I just wish that he would be a bit more humble and use it better.
My only other beef is that despite supposedly being a mix of Chinese and American cultures (and actually in terms of architechture and clothing that is done pretty well) there are only Chinese people in like two episodes. And always with chickens.
EDIT: I guess some of my wariness with the series also comes from my interactions with the fans; to be fair. In response to "do you like Firefly?" I answered "it was pretty good" and then listed a few things that I thought could have been improved, such as that note of the lack of Chinese people. This led to an hour long debate that I didn't really want a part of. Firefly fans can be rabid I guess.
