  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It may sound weird but I finally came to the realization that this show would have been better without Joss Wheedon. I came to this conclusion basically after hearing a lot from the actors directors etc. through commentaries and what not, and Joss Wheedon is just too full of himself to admit that he is wrong. Ever. I still regret listening to the commentary for "Objects in Space;" never before have I heard so much unabashed egotistical ramblings. The other problems is that he has a habit of writing bad lines (probably because he can't seperate his good from his bad); and that he turns River into a walking existentialist showpiece, which got annoying for me. I still have to wonder how much of the show's problems were due to Fox's annoyance with Joss's obssession with making the series wide screen. Don't get me wrong, Joss Wheedon has talent, I just wish that he would be a bit more humble and use it better.

My only other beef is that despite supposedly being a mix of Chinese and American cultures (and actually in terms of architechture and clothing that is done pretty well) there are only Chinese people in like two episodes. And always with chickens.

EDIT: I guess some of my wariness with the series also comes from my interactions with the fans; to be fair. In response to "do you like Firefly?" I answered "it was pretty good" and then listed a few things that I thought could have been improved, such as that note of the lack of Chinese people. This led to an hour long debate that I didn't really want a part of. Firefly fans can be rabid I guess.

A series that was far too brilliant to be grasped by the likes of Fox executives, I guess. It makes me wish I had gigantic piles of money so that I could give a bunch to Joss Whedon and say, "Here. Now you will make Firefly again."

Come, come, Fox exectutives would never do such a thing....oh wait, they axed Arrested Development after only 2 1/2 flippin' seasons!

I still cry about that sometimes.

Anyway, I watched Serenity first, and loved it, and my wife and I just started watching the first disc of Firefly on DVD and we are loving it too.

For me a novel concept goes a long way, and this was one of the best I have seen in a looong time.

I am wondering if there are any Firefly fans around here. In my opinion the best sci fi ever created. Such a well written story and very memorable characters.
I had to respond... Firefly was an excellent example of great visual programming - super actors - and clueless network executives. I was not a fan of the show when it was originally broadcast. A friend of mine bought us the box set. My wife almost returned it but I had really wanted to see what it was all about. If the network would have allowed it to play the way it was written then I think it would have had a complete season pick-up. LOST is the same format that firefly was - however I think people couldn't get past the Sci-fi space western. It was great and the Movie was a wonderful conclusion. I doubt that it will be brought back... however stranger things have happened...:prayer:

River: Jayne is a girl's name.

Jayne: Well Jayne ain't a girl!

Mal was definitely my favorite character. He was the man. You know, he was Private James Fredrick Ryan from Minnesota in Saving Private Ryan.

I hate the Fox network executives for cancelling it.

ARgh! That just sucks.
The Execs at the time didn't know what gold they had... the did the same thing to Space Above and Beyond YEARS ago by putting it on at 7pm after football and preempting it so often - such babyheads.

It was very clever, though. Spoiler Alert! After they killed Book, a typical movie-goer (who had seen the series and gotten attached to the characters) thought they'd killed their obligatory main character and everyone else was okay. When Wash got it, one began to get concerned for the safety of the rest of the crew.

Hey there. Thanks to my friend Photios, I have recently become a Browncoat. Haven't seen Serenity yet, though.
Finish the series and then get the movie - it is AWESOME - and I am sorry for forgetting to place a spoiler alert before what I said... DUH...

You are completely correct - I NEVER saw that one coming... It just made the movie more believable...
and gave it that much more risk... I hope that one day Joss gets a chance to do something in that world again... It is cool when I read things and he is quoted as loving that show as much as we do...
