Tom rose and they followed him outside.

Gesturing at the beautiful surroundings, he said, "I led my family and friends into a prison!"

His son laid his hand on his father's arm comfortingly.

"A prison? What do you mean?" Lost said.

"I am a disloyal coward who fled, who turned his back on the soldiers under his command, who left them to their fate. When I learned that an enemy was approaching our city, I did not help prepare for battle. I bolted from the Palace, grabbed my wife and son and as much as we could load onto our horses and rode out of town, heading for here. I knew of this place from childhood. Some of my friends in the Army came with us too."

"But - but - the King and the other Army leaders would have noticed you weren't helping prepare for battle, surely?" Lilac asked.

"I led them to believe I was riding to our secret stores outside the city with my men, to fetch more arms hidden there. I lied to my King and broke his trust."

The crew looked at each other. They could see the effort it had cost Tom to tell them these things. It was apparent that he bitterly regretted breaking trust with his King and his men. Compassion flooded through them as Tom regarded them silently.

"This is why we are here. To speak of God's forgiveness, His mercy and grace," David thought.

"You said this is a prison, Tom?" js said, cutting into David's thoughts.

"Yes, it is. We fled here as only a handful of people knew of this little valley in the forest. My father showed it to me when I was a child and told me never to tell anyone else of it. It was to be our refuge, our sanctuary from the battle and possible usurping of the King's throne. But it is a prison - literally and figuratively. My shame imprisoned me."

A few of the crew broke into speech then, all seeking to reassure Tom.

"We can't leave, even if we want to," Tom's son interjected. "This is an enchanted place. No one leaves here until the conditions are fulfilled."

The crew gaped at Tom as his words sank in.

"Tom, much as I like your little utopia here, my crew and I will leave whenever we want," David said firmly.

CTC said, "What on earth does that mean? Enchanted? Surely that's the stuff of fairy tales? This is 2018 - a more prosaic time could almost not be imagined."

Tom shook his head. "What my son says is true. You will find there is an invisible boundary encompassing an area of roughly five square miles, including a quarter of a mile out to sea, beyond which no one here may pass."

LaSorcia leapt to her feet. "What do you want with us? Why would you keep us prisoner here?"

"You have all been curious about the time thing. When we fled, we were stopped at the edge of our lands here. An old man spoke with me. I believe now that he was a messenger of the Lord Himself. He knew everything that was in my heart, cowardice, greed, disloyalty, self-centredness. He knew I was dragging family and friends with me. He suggested I return, that I take a different path, put value into the things that truly matter." Tom looked at his wife, clearing away the breakfast things.

"I was so arrogant. I derided the advice, made to push my way past. To me, I was doing the right thing by my family, keeping them safe here. The old man told me that it was my choice, but things would not be as I imagined. To my shame, I laughed at him, said I had all I wanted, my family, my riches and a safe place for us to enjoy life without responsibilities to anyone else. He let me pass. When we arrived here, I found a letter in my saddlebag. He must have slipped it in as I left. It is a message from the Lord Himself."

Tom unrolled a piece of thick paper, covered in beautiful writing.

The crew crowded round eagerly. Tom began to read parts of it.

"Enchanted forest; cannot leave until certain conditions are met; visitors..."

"Oh, what does it say about visitors?" Lost interrupted eagerly.

"Basically that we may ask visitors for help. They will agree or refuse. We will abide by their wishes. If they refuse, they will be able to leave, but we will not. Your ancestors chose to leave, js."

js felt an unutterable sadness in hearing Tom's words. She felt deep in her spirit that perhaps their decision had been the wrong one.

Tom pointed at the vegetables in the gardens. All fully grown and healthy.

"When we pick a lettuce, there is another full-grown one waiting for us the next morning. The trees never lose their leaves, the sun always shines, rain always falls in the night to nourish the land, no enemy ever finds his way here, day follows day in perfect harmony."

"Sounds idyllic, but slightly boring, Tom?" Spikey said with an attempt at humour.

Tom's son grinned with a nod of his head.

"Nothing ever dies here. Nothing ever ages. Everything remains at optimum health. And so it has been for the last 700 or so years."

A stunned silence followed these words. 700 years?

"Are you saying you met my ancestors yourself, Tom?" js asked, scarcely believing she was actually considering that statement to be fact.

"Yes, I did. You see, time almost stands still here. One day and one night is all we are permitted in this enchanted place and it repeats over and over again. We have lost track of how many 'real' years we have been here, but our calculations indicate it's hundreds of years. 1769 was a guess," he said apologetically. "Obviously out by a few hundred years, eh?"

How many more shocks, sunshine thought to herself, as she looked round fearfully.

Tom caught her glance and said, "Perhaps enchanted is the wrong word. It is a sacred place because this place is the Lord's. See - at the bottom of this letter, it says he owns it, created it, in fact. It is certainly a refuge, but not in the way I imagined. In my mind, it was to be a place apart from the world, a place where all we had to think about was ourselves. Ignore the world, hide away here and live happily ever after, as in your fairy tales, CTC. Then we learned of the limitations as set out in the letter. For a long time, they meant nothing to me. All I wanted was right here. But slowly the Lord's ways, the Lord's thoughts crept into my mind. You know the diamonds you found on the beach, sunshine? You should have heard my whoops of joy when I first saw them. Rich beyond my wildest dreams, I thought. But no. That was a hard lesson."

It was a lot to take in. And the crew still didn't know what they could do to help Tom and his community. He read their thoughts.

"I want to go back. I want to reprise my role as Captain and lead my men into battle. Take my place in the world, if it be His will and live as He would have me live."

Puzzled looks between the crew was their polite way of saying, "But you can't. By all accounts that was hundreds of years ago now."

Tom smiled and said, "Yes, it is possible. With the Lord, anything is possible. My faith is strong now. He has communicated with us many times, you know. Letters that arrive in the night. He watches over us, I know. I think He was here just last night, actually."

js remembered the movement in the gardens as she looked out her bedroom window. If what Tom said was true, that was thrilling news indeed!

David let out a deep breath. It was a lot to take in after all. Far from building a nice little church for these people, here they were in an enchanted valley in an enchanted part of a forest called The Great Forest in some country which had not even been named as yet, imprisoned by an invisible boundary, keeping company with people - really lovely people to be sure - but people who had actually been alive for over 700 years! Lord, help me to understand! he prayed silently.

"So what do you need us to do to help you?" David said, straight to the point as usual.

"Agree to my request to accompany us back to the battle. If you do, we will be permitted to leave the women and children here for safety, the enchantment will be lifted and our families will be able to join us when it is safe to do so. The Lord will examine my heart, so that even if you agree, it will not take place unless He agrees too. I think I am ready," Tom said humbly.

"Why not just stay here and lead a cruisy life, Tom? I mean, food with no work, peace and tranquility if that's what you're into, no worries, no old age, no death! Sounds like a good deal to me," Spikey said casually, but looking at Tom keenly.

"This place isn't real," Tom replied. "It's like marking time, on and on forever. I realise now the way the Lord wants us to live. And I want to live that way. We all do. Service to others. Loyalty. Faithfulness to the Lord and those around us. When I rode into this place, the Lord barely entered my thoughts at any time. Our country knows of the Lord, but has not really committed to Him. His plans for me were of no consequence to me at that time."

"I have been twelve forever!" Tom's son said. "Well, almost forever. I want to grow up, live life with all its joys and despairs. I want to work and be useful, help others, tell people about the Lord."

The crew were impressed with the child's maturity and desire to serve the Lord.

js quoted Matthew 22:37-39, her favourite verses.

‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’

"We have had time," Tom chuckled for a moment, 'plenty of time to ponder, to meditate, to consider. We are all agreed. We are ready to go back. We will await your decision."

"But how can we possibly get shot back in time by 700 years?" CTC asked.

"The Lord will lift the enchantment and time will resume from the moment we entered this place," Tom replied. "At first I saw this as a place of freedom, then as a prison, but now I see it as a place where the Lord graciously granted us time to grow in Him. We are blessed beyond measure. He has sent only the Polynesians and you people. I now believe the Polynesians refused to help because we were not ready to follow Him. I was not ready to follow Him."

David stood and the others followed suit. "I suggest we all take some time alone and pray about this. We will meet back here in an hour's time?"

The crew nodded and made their way into the forest at different points, there to seek God's will.

"Maybe we got zapped into the future, not the past, as Lilac suggested," Spikey thought as he made his way into the forest. "To a time when time travel and invisible boundaries are run-of-the-mill occurrences."

"Can't get my head round this 700 years and time standing still business," David thought. "Tom was deadly serious, though. I can pick when a chap is lying, though I say it myself, and he isn't one of them."

"A battle?" sunshine thought. "That sounds scary. I wonder if I could stay here. No, then the enchantment won't be lifted."

"A battle?" LaSorcia thought. "I could get to wield one of those beautiful swords! If it's that sort of battle. I do hope so!"

"Tom said he guessed the year 1769. Something is still wrong there, though," Lost thought as he walked through the forest. "I just can't figure out how that aligns with 2018. Must have been a pretty wild guess."

"Was it only yesterday that we were bobbing up and down on the ocean, with nothing more exciting going on than the thought of our next meal?" Dirk thought. His heart pounded in anticipation as he thought about this battle Tom talked of. What weapons would be used? Presumably swords. Just as well he'd done a spot of fencing in his time.

"If all of this is real and I'm not having the longest, weirdest dream of my life on that ship, then I want to know - so much!" CTC thought as he wandered off.

"My brain is reeling. Need a quiet place right now. Here will do," as Lilac sank down under a tree and rested against it to ponder all she had heard.

js slipped away after a quiet word with Tom. She had had a thought and put it to Tom. He answered her and she now felt elated, though she could scarcely credit what he'd told her. She didn't dare share it with the others as they each needed to reach a decision on their own, one that was not influenced by this information. But oh, she hoped they would all agree to help Tom and his family and friends.

Sam91 fancied a change. She reached into her handbag while walking and swapped her yarmulke-of-unyielding-strength-for-the-weak-and-utterly-feeble-at-heart for the yarmulke of precise-and-self-righteous-Pharisaical-observitude and smiled at the good @Doctor.Sphinx, who visibly paled.

'Now Sphinxy! I think your soul is troubled. Why else would you pale so? If you were righteous you wouldn't feel shame at my yarmulke.

You have been overly quiet since GW's disappearance and more so since the capture of those Philistines. Have thou repentest? '

An hour later, David and the crew gathered in the garden. There was no sign of Tom and his son.

No one spoke for a minute, each feeling reluctant to be the first to offer their view on Tom's amazing story and request. In point of fact, Tom's story had also given the crew pause for thought as to their own lives. It was a sober group who came together again.

LaSorcia said, "Let's sit down, everyone. We have a lot to discuss."

Lost immediately spoke up. He really was struggling with the time factor, where it seemed the others were prepared to just roll with it. For now, anyway.

"What will happen if we agree to go back with Tom? That will mean we will be in the 1300's. I don't think our ship will be sitting patiently in the harbour for us. We will be stuck in this time warp or whatever forever!"

"I could live with that," LaSorcia said dreamily, her mind on swords and shields and horses stamping and prancing.

"Well, I couldn't," sunshine said. "Adventure is all very well, but this is supposed to be an educational interlude for me. I don't want to learn that I can never go back home."

"I'm assuming that if we accompany Tom, we will be sent back to this time later on," CTC said hopefully. "Otherwise, yes, it will be awkward for sure. Though I'm not actually in a hurry to leave. Very interesting, all this..." as he began making more notes in his journal.

"I'm wondering - if we go with Tom to this battle, will we be expected to take part in the battle?" Dirk asked.

"Easy to see what you want to do, Dirk!" Spikey said with a grin, as Dirk brandished an imaginary sword.

"Why can't Tom just go with the Lord's blessing? Why this request to us?" Lilac said.

I'm thinking it's about the self-sufficiency thing Tom mentioned. Asking us requires humility, putting his trust in us, working with us as a team, accepting help, surrendering total control. Stuff like that," js said.

"I agree," David said. "Right, let's make our decision. Tom will be waiting. My prayerful response to the request is for us to go with Tom and his men."

Everyone else nodded in agreement and David felt proud of his crew. They really were a pretty good bunch.

He went in search of Tom and the crew watched as David shared their decision with him. David signalled to the others to join them and Tom thanked them all. Glancing at js, Tom gave an imperceptible shake of his head.

"He doesn't want me to share what he told me earlier. All in good time, then," js thought.

"Tonight I will go to the shore alone and wait for the Lord. He will come, I am sure, and we will talk," Tom told them. Now, how about some lunch?"

"If only I could have a few ribs with my veges," David thought as they headed for the hall. The others seemed to be surviving just fine on this vegetarian diet, but his stomach was rumbling in loud protest. "All in a good cause!" he told himself, which didn't comfort him at all.

So David's eyes nearly popped out of his head when he saw sausages heaped on platters.

As soon as grace was said, David took a sausage and bit hungrily into it."This is delicious!" he announced, taking another huge bite.

"Glad you like them," Tom replied. "They're vegetarian sausages!"

Everyone burst out laughing at the amazed expression on David's face.

"OK, you got me! Got me good! But hey, they do taste great! Pass me another one, js?"

While the noble Captain feasted on sausages Sam91 stared at the good Doctor.Sphinx waiting for an answer.

He sighed and said 'It is a shame that your yarmulke does not lead you to see truth but just points with which to harangue your brother. If you had observed where I was looking when you say that I had paled, you would have seen that I had observed the first of the stone statues. Keep your eyes sharp and I suggest a more appropriate yarmulke. Unless you think you can defeat the ice queen with a debate on bible verse and a holier than thou attitude....'

Samantha was indignant. 'How durst thou accuseth me so! Removest thine own log before accusing a sister!'

The level headed @Doctor.Sphinx turned around and reached for @Sam91's yarmulke. Samantha ducked and charged for the Sphinx's hips.

He was lifted into the air and he grabbed her waist and was clinging on to her before she twisted and they both landed on the floor. She proceeded to try to punch the usually good doc. Being more skilled in the art of war he dodged and rose to his feet.

'Samantha whatever has gotten in to you? What is this violence!'

'Thou are a hypocrite! A fiend! A scoundrel!' She bellowed.

'Samantha, you are enchanted! There must be sorcery at hand now that we are near the castle. Be quiet before we're undone and becomest made of stone. Look around. See the statues, your expression matches theirs'

'How dare you liken me to a gargoyle!' she raged.

The good sphinx with a heavy heart picked her up and shoved her inside her spacious handbag in order to preserve both their lives...

Once again, the good doctor was mesmerised by the cleverness and convenience of @Sam91's handbag. Although his fiesty comrade continued to shout, complain and insult, the design of the handbag was such that once an object (or indeed, an entire lady) was placed inside, not only was the object's (or lady's) size much reduced, but also it's (or her) capacity to make noise. Sam91's voice was now much reduced, although shriller, and the good doctor was just about to zip the handbag up for the next stretch of the journey, when he started.

'Did she? Could she have? Surely not?' he thought. He sincerely hoped that he was wrong, but it sounded as if his little friend had just likened him to the unwholesome and undeniably-wretched philistines who were the cause of this rescue mission in the first place. He put his hand in the bag to pet his little friend on her head, and maybe dislodge that yarmulke of precise-and-self-righteous-Pharisaical-observitude that had seemed to put her in such an angry state of mind.

'There, there, little one,' he comforted.

From Sam91's perspective, a tiny captive inside her own handbag, with an enormous finger stroking her head, the doctor's voice positively boomed, and certainly drowned out all her cleverly composed insults relating to long strings of philistine adjectives, and how these excelled sphinxes and doctors in general.

'I understand you are much more Pharisaical in your observitude than I,' the voice boomed, and Sam91 wondered if there was an ounce of repentence in the booming voice. However, she quickly changed her opinion as the booming voice started lecturing her on Paul's words from Philippians 3.

'A Hebrew of Hebrews, and Pharisee indeed,' she said to herself. 'I am twice the Pharisee anyone else ever was, and when it comes to being a Hebrew, why, I'm worth at least five, probably more, because of my self-righteousness. As for those other things...'

Poor Sam91 didn't get to finish that particular self-righteous thought, because Doctor Sphinx's enormous finger had finally managed to remove the yarmulke of precise-and-self-righteous-Pharisaical-observitude from her head, with his stroking action, which he was conducting as gently as he was able, although still somewhat roughly due to Sam91's diminished stature. However, the doctor did not realise he had been successful, and at about the same time as his success, quickly removed his hand from the handbag as though something within it had bitten him, which in fact, it had.

Nursing his sore finger, he gingerly zipped up the handbag, and wondered what the penalty would be this time, for manhandling his useful but difficult-from-time-to-time companion. 'Probably a guillotine', he reasoned. 'Hard for him to blame this one on a wart or a cancer... Hopefully a smaller guillotine, though', he thought. 'Maybe a finger sized guillotine of righteousness...'

It was dark now, with the moon shining brightly. He had come to where the valley opened out, and on the other side of the river, in the middle of a little plain between two hills, he saw what must be the White Witch’s House - which was really more of a castle. The house seemed to be all towers - little towers with long pointed spires on them, sharp and needle-like. They looked similar to huge dunce’s caps. And they shone in the moonlight, casting strange, long shadows on the snow.

The Doctor really wished his friend could be out to enjoy the view with him, but after considering the fact that he may need the use of all his fingers to defeat the White Witch, he put the thought out of his mind, and carried on.

'Although...' He hesitated... 'Why the White Witch was utilising Philistines in her plot... That really was something only Sam91 might have a hope of deducing...'

He crossed a river of ice, and walked up to the castle. It was late, and nothing stirred, there was not the slightest sound anywhere. He wondered if little Sam91 within the handbag had any idea of where they were. He walked on and on, past
corner after corner of the castle, and past turret after turret to find a door. He had to go right round to the far side before he found it. It was a huge arch but the great iron gates stood wide open.

Doctor Sphinx strode up to the arch and looked inside into the courtyard, and there he saw a sight that nearly made his heart stop beating. At least, it would nearly have made his heart stop beating were he an ordinary man, but he was not an ordinary man, and his heart was not an ordinary heart. This said, the sight did encourage the Doctor to quickly unsheath his sword from its holster as quietly as he was able, and grasp it a little tighter.

Just inside the gate, with the moonlight shining on it, stood an enormous lion crouched as if it was ready to spring. The doctor waited a few moments, unsure whether to retreat and accept his punishment from Sam91 in return for the aid of his companion, or simply to give up on the Green Leprechaun altogether. He certainly didn't think the odds of a single Sphinx against this lion were odds to gamble on - certainly not any significant amount, anyway. As he reflected, he realised that the lion did not move, and decided to creep slowly closer. He breathed a sigh of relief when he realised the lion was entirely made of stone.

At this point, he could see dozens of statues all about, standing here and there as if they were pieces in a life-size game of chess, that had been stopped half-way through the game. There were stone satyrs, stone wolves, bears, foxes and something like wildcats. There were lovely stone shapes that looked like women - the Doctor probably spent a little longer admiring these than he really should have, but the beauty and gracefulness of the curved features took him by surprise, and his eyes - unprepared for the sight and thus not wearing the dark-tinted sunglasses of protection against aesthetic enchantment - searched out the intricate splendor until his will, realising what was happening, took over. He was momentarily glad that his friend was in the handbag, and not by his side to rebuke him. There was the great shape of a centaur, the shape of a winged horse, and some sort of dragon. In the middle of the statues stood a giant, as tall as a tree, with a fierce face, long beard and a club.

The statues, combined with the distance and the walking, had helped Doctor Sphinx to think more clearly, and although it was partly true what he had told Sam91 - that his face had paled because of a stone statue he had seen, he realised his sister had been partly correct - that he had indeed felt shame earlier, because her yarmulke had brought to light some of his own shortcomings. What use was a finger, or even a hand, if it offendeth a sister such as she?

Donning the yarmulke of sackcloth-and-ashes-for-the-humbly-penitent, Doctor Sphinx unzipped the handbag, whilst whispering 'Oh sister, please forgiveth mine transgression'. He reached inside the handbag and withdrew the now-sleeping Sam91.

'I repentest, dear sister,' the doctor stated sincerely. 'Here is the finger which I believeth didst offendeth thee.'

Samantha stirred and sat up. Her crankiness had worn off inside the bag; unless it was because she was now protected from the curse in the area by the yarmulke-of-protection-against-mental-eavesdroppers.

Like a hamster, or one of @gerbilwoman 's rodents she walked up the finger and onto the penitent-and-good doctors wrist. The good doc pinched her by her furry coat and lifted her out the bag.

'Oh Sphinxy, I am so sorry. I do not know what came over me but I'll never wear that yarmulke again.' She succeeded in adding some tears in her eyes for effect.

'Are you sure you don't want to excise the finger that offended thee? I was thinking you could use your guilotine of righteousness?' The doctor added gently.

Samantha smirked... she had actually gotten away with something at last. She was also touched at how well the good doc knew her.

'No! You'll need that for sword wielding!'... She winked friendly-ly. The good doctor S gave a suppressed smile. She continued 'Thank you for letting me rest. Where are we?'

'Just inside the witch's palace... I thought you would like to see it and might have an idea of how to find our absent green friend.' He replied.

Samantha shrugged and gestured forward. The sphinx nodded and took the lead. Sam91 held the staser fast that she'd pocketed while in captivity.

The corridors were cold and the air extremely dry, or was it moist, whichever it was it hurt to breathe. They walked as silently as possible, Samantha took comfort in that she wasn't the one going to get hit by a surprise attack from the front.

'Yes, my queen.' Said a familiar voice nearby.
Footsteps approached. Sam91 and the Sphinx hid behind grotesque statues placed in hollows in the corridor.

Samantha rubbed her eyes in disbelief. Scurrying happily down the corridor was the green wizard. The magnificently courageous Sphinx darted out and whispered 'GW..'

Green Wizard's eyes flashed angrily at the sight of the good doc. 'INTRUDER' he yelled with a touch of glee.

Samantha, quietly, remained hidden.

The White Witch appeared infront of the statue Samantha was shielding behind.

'What is this? A sphinx to add to my vast array of trophies? Green Wizard, you didn't say he was quite somewhat handsome, all the finer a prize to display for all eternity' the White Witch smarmed in her seductive, smooth but odiously evil voice.

She raised her wand but Samantha dashed out yelling 'HERETIC!'

The witch turned sharply and swiped her wand as the staser blast flashed. The witch stood still, unharmed as the blast merely went past her like the wind. GW fell to the floor writhing in pain. The heroic Sphinx seized the moment. He leapt and ran the White Witch through with his sword just as she turned to face him. Eyes open wide, she breathed her last. She aged quickly as she died, putrifying before his eyes.

Breathing heavily, valiant, triumphant, relieved, the Sphinx looked to meet Samantha's eyes but she wasn't there. His gaze dropped to the mass of fur on the floor. His heart barely beating, his legs heavy as stone, he approached the still mass. As he knelt to check her vitals he felt she was limp but as cold as ice. He turned her face towards him and gasped at her skin being white like snow, her lips and hair with a thin layer of frost, eyes closed with the sleep of death.

He gathered his dear friend's well proportioned head onto his knees and not-so-imaginary tears trickled warmly onto his cheeks.

As Dr S and Sam stole silently among the stone statues, each one depicting terror and despair in equal portions, the moonlight which flooded the courtyard cast eerie shadows which seemed to harbour even greater terrors. In shocking contrast, the moon shone down benignly onto the peaceful valley with its lovely stone houses where David and his crew were enjoying supper outdoors.

They had spent a wonderful afternoon. Although there was an air of marking time evident to all of them as they awaited Tom's arrival back from the shore, they felt relaxed and at peace. Perhaps a novel experience for one or two of the crew. Certainly js had plenty to think about as she had spent some time with Tom's wife that afternoon.

Always interested in her own family history, js had been thrilled when Tom's wife showed her the records Tom had kept of the Polynesian visitors all those years ago. On perusing the names, js had let out a yell of joy when she saw the founder of her own iwi/tribe listed. Tom's wife had laughed and laughed when js seized her and danced her round the hall.

"If only I could photograph this list. Well, it's hardly a list - more like an ornately decorated document. So beautiful," js thought. But at least she knew her ancestor had been among the voyagers to visit here, even if she could still only hazard a guess as to why.

Thoughts of battles had faded somewhat as the afternoon wore on. The peace and tranquility of the valley was taking hold. It was easy to see how the days could slip by in unending sameness in this place, until something happened to make one realise that ten years, twenty years, a hundred years had passed one by. Some of the crew now gave almost no thought to any of the questions that had puzzled them so much when first they arrived.

CTC, however, was writing furiously in his journal, his supper drink ignored and going cold. No one else seemed to be keeping detailed notes of all that was happening. Or any notes at all. CTC was determined to capture everything in writing. He knew his memory was capable of playing tricks on him and frankly, he had no faith in anyone else's ability to retain perfect snapshots of all that was taking place.

Lilac was busy too, her pencil flying as she drew broad strokes on a piece of paper. Tom's wife had given her a ream of paper and Lilac had spent the afternoon making sketches of the village, the forest, the snow-capped mountains brooding in the distance, Tom and his family, the crew having running races and losing - badly - to Tom's menfolk and now Lilac was sketching an evening scene, the moon smiling down on people sitting round talking quietly, waiting for Tom.

"Patience has never been a strong point of mine," js thought, "but here I find I can wait....oh, here comes Tom!" as thoughts of patience flew out of her head.

The crew looked round expectantly as Tom strode up to them, a broad smile on his face.

"Yes?" Spikey said.

"Yes!" Tom said.

Tom's face glowed. He hadn't really expected the Lord to come in person, if truth be told. Perhaps a letter placed on the shore, or perhaps even a messenger. But He had come and Tom was filled with joy. It radiated from him and affected everyone. The fear they all secretly felt just hearing the word 'battle' was dispelled in an instant as they beheld Tom. Courage seemed to physically enter their bodies and their minds at that instant.

"He was satisfied I have not wasted my time here, though it did take me rather a long time." Tom chuckled, then said, "Tomorrow we are to be at the western boundary at 12 noon. The Lord will lift the enchantment and time will resume at the exact moment we entered this place so long ago. The secret stores are not too far away, hidden on a secret route from the King's palace to this valley. We should have ample time to collect the stores and arrive back as if nothing had ever happened. Which will be very strange, in a way. The Lord has said no one is to know of this place. We are not to speak of our experiences here to anyone."

"I want to see the Lord for myself so badly," js thought as she listened carefully to Tom.

"What about us? What's our cover story?" David asked.

"I will simply tell the truth. You sailed into the bay, came ashore at our invitation and have offered to help us in the battle."

"Yes!" Dirk thought. "Now I just need a weapon. I guess Tom will help us out with that."

"Tell us about this enemy, Tom," Lost said. "Why are they suddenly attacking you, anyway, after years of peace?"

"Suffice to say we are not the target, Lost. We just happen to stand in the way of a far greater conquest."

"Ah. So take you out and then go full tilt for the real target?"

"Exactly."

"Ok, let's pray, everyone, and then hit the hay," David said.

The doctor knew he had to work quickly. Although Sam91 was cold as ice, he understood that her life-force was still present, though quickly trickling from her kind heart into her well-proportioned head. If he left her too long, her soul might reform outside her body, and the angels would escort her up into Heaven. He opened up her handbag and rummaged through for a yarmulke that might be of help.

'The yarmulke-of elimination-for-stubborn-to-remove-protrusions-of-pride? Too late for that one.'

'The yarmulke of masterful-mohelets-momentary-melioration? Save that for the philistines.'

'The yarmulke-of painful-but-nonetheless--spiritual-beneficial-surgery? Possibly, but she needs more than spiritually beneficial surgery today.'

'The yarmulke of helpful-guide-to-nursing-for-the-surprisingly-inept-leprechaun? Not a leprechaun.'

'The yarmulke of enablement-of-super-heroinic-powers-of-biblical-proportions? Might be helpful, but I'm a little too male for that one, even if I had a skirt to wear.'

'The melodious-maestro's yarmulke for harmonious-highland-bagpipes? Hmmmm... It's not rocket surgery, but it just may buy me some time.'

Quickly donning the selected yarmulke, and grabbing a set of bagpipes from Sam91's handbag, the Doctor began to play Scotland the Brave. Legend informs us that a well-played bagpipe has the miraculous power of being able to bring fallen soldiers back from the dead - at least temporarily - and Doctor Sphinx quickly learned that this power also extends to fallen women. The colour and warmth began to return to Sam91's cheeks, but she was still decidedly unhealthy looking...

Putting the bagpipes back down, and scrabbling further through her handbag, he pulled out the yarmulke of unicorn-surgery-for-dummies. The Doctor shed another tear for what was likely to become of her well-formed nose... 'But 'tis for the best,' he told himself as he donned said yarmulke, and set to work on the girl once again.

When he fniished, he was pleased to note that Sam91 seemed to be breathing again. The colour had returned to her cheeks, the warmth to her face and hands. He glanced nervously at her new nose - long and ivory-coloured, beautiful in it's own way, like a unicorn's horn - but somewhat out of place on Sam91's face, and certainly different to the nose she'd had before.

He didn't know whether she was going to be angry at him for changing her looks, or pleased that he saved her life, so he made the best of it and made sure he'd removed all mirrors from her handbag.

'Perhaps she need never find out?' the doctor reasoned to himself.

Sam 91 woke up. Her head was sore. Her nose was sore and cold. She went to touch it and knocked of a pile off impacted snow. She gave the good doctor a not amused scowl. Knocked out and he starts building sculptures on top of her face.... she shook her head quite judgementally. She sat up as a centaur galloped past her, dwarfs singing as they entered the palace from the court yard. A cocophony of noise approached, a celebration infact.

Silence descended as one by one, the crew fell asleep. David, however, remained awake for some time, wrestling with the knowledge that his crew actually planned to take part in this upcoming battle.

"It's too dangerous," he thought. "It's one thing to accompany Tom to the palace. That sounds straightforward. Presumably the enemy will be nowhere near at that point. And as far as I know, that will fulfill the conditions for Tom once and for all. But it's quite another thing to go charging into battle, wielding a sword against - who knows what? Have any of them ever really lifted a sword in a fight? Dirk and Spikey have been cutting and thrusting with sticks all evening, in faint preparation." David sighed. "As for the girls - they are all keen to fight as well. Even gentle sunshine said she would do her best. Oh, Lord, please watch over us."

As soon as David made it to the breakfast table in the morning, he knew his thoughts of ordering his crew to hide in the palace during the battle or rushing them straight back to the valley after seeing Tom to the palace, were in vain. Animated discussions were taking place as the crew tucked into another delicious breakfast. Swords and shields, horses and surprise attacks were on everyone's lips. Tom had already promised to provide them with all they would need. An air of excitement grew palpably as the conversations continued.

David groaned. "They are so caught up in the seeming romance of it all. It won't be like that at all, or I'm not a salty sea dog who has sailed the seven seas."

His thoughts broke off as Lost handed him a map. "Drew it myself, with a bit of help from Tom's son over there," giving the lad the thumbs up. "He's even helped me to map the secret route to the Palace from here, strictly for our eyes only. See, it's not really very far to..."

David stopped listening as Lost talked on. He felt as if he were looking at a scene in a play, one where he knew the ending could be the worst possible one. He wanted to shout No! at the crew, to safeguard them. Tom quietly spoke David's name. David looked at Tom, who nodded slowly.

David took a breath. Ate some toast and drank his tea. "Choices. We all make them. May the Lord watch over us all."
