Why is it so stressful? I never assumed it was an easy job but, must admit, it never occurred to me it was actively stressy, much less in the top 3! Is it from talking to us luddites so much? :(

If so, on behalf of all luddites, am really sorry
haha I like you luddites. It's the people that "think" they know what they're doing that are frustrating!! Example (I love writing these):

Caller: Hey, I can't print.
Me: Ok. Go ahead and restart your PC. That'll probably clear it up.
Caller: I already did that three times!
Me: Humor me...go ahead and try it.
Caller: I don't see why I have to...oh, all right.
*restarts PC*
*long pause*
Me: How'z it going?
Caller: Oh it's printing now. Bye.

Also some of the people I work with know very little about computers. I have to listen to them "work" and it is truly painful. Imagine a mechanic who can't turn a wrench. I have no problem with folks that don't have much computer knowledge. But I do ask that they don't try working in IT!!
^_^
What is really embarrassing is having a coworker ask me a question and I know it could be answered by a two-second Google search.
*facepalm*

Sounds horrid, WWC, sorry it's so stressful.
But the change in days sounds positive..praying it gives you more time to relax and wind down.

Insomnia is horrible! I find it helps to get up and do something, then go back to bad.. otherwise I lie there getting more and more he up about not sleeping!
Try to look at it as a blessing.. a few hours in the middle of the night to send time with God without the interruptions of the daytime!
Thank you! I'm holding onto that silver lining...

Dealt with insomnia years ago when I worked nights. Not fun!

All our tech support people are in India nowadays. I know it's wonderful for them, so it's so good in many ways, but it's SO frustrating because the language barrier makes something stressful even more so :(

B, do you honestly get cases like the one you quoted? Cos, wow. Is it not funny when it happens? Cos it's laugh out loud funny in the reading :D (sorry :sorry:)

We have several Indian programmers (and Asian as well) working here. They are nice in person, but actually quite demanding when they have to call *me* for support. lol It's a very interesting reversal.

You know, it is funny. And sometimes I do laugh. It's just hearing the same joke the 156,998,000th time wears a bit thin!
:p
That was just one example and not even a very bad one really.

Here's one I get a lot that does grate on my nerves:
Caller: I can't log in.
Me: Ok, what screen are you on right now?
Caller: I can't log in!
Me: I know. I just need to know which screen you're on so I know what to do next.
Caller: Um...Microsoft?
Me: All right. What message do you get when you put in your password?
Caller: *reads message*
Me: Oh. You're actually on the mainframe. Let me reset your password.
*resets password*
Me: Ok, now put in that temp password and hit enter.
Caller: Hit enter?
Me: Yes.
Caller: It says put in your new password. *pause* Should I do that?
Me: Oh...yeah.
Caller: Now it says put it in again. *pause* What do I do?
Me: *facepalm* Put it in again.
Caller: Put it in now??
Me: Please...
Caller: Oh. I'm in now! Thank you!!

That ^^ is if everything goes well!!
In the words of my countrymen:
"God bless their little hearts."

Hope you enjoy that one!!

I have been doing tech support over the phone for exactly six years! Most people don't last more than six months...a year at the most. After that you get into the burnout zone very easily.

Basically a day full of pure mental stress with no physical outlet.

I heard this statistic last year. The top three most stressful professions are dentist, air traffic controller...and tech support.

This is just a random link Google spit out:
http://claireb.wordpress.com/2007/1...rofessions-and-other-top-workplace-stressors/
It lists IT as the top.
If you look at the list of Stresses and Irritations...they all apply to me. In spades!!

Sometimes I laugh at how ridiculous my job is. Other times I feel like crying.

One silver lining is that I am shifting over to a weekend schedule in January. That will mean I work by myself (as opposed to with 10 irritating people...yipee!!) Saturday and Sunday with only working Monday and Wednesday during the week.
That will actually help a whole lot...
:)

Doh...engineering is high up there as well.

I was tech support WHILE IN engineering school. :D I actually enjoyed it, though, but, yeah, when people are already irritated because they have to call you to begin with, the greatest challenge can be allowing them to vent in order to get them to understand that they never had a computer problem; only user issues. Getting them to realize that without ever having to say it can be fun. ;)

Hello everyone. A little confused about tomorrow. I'm as introverted as it gets (shy too) and I'm going to something completely new tomorrow. A young adult group.
Hey, Ish

Why confused, bro? It sounds *awesome*, and so positive. I think sometimes God leads us to things like that to bring us out of our shells a little. Ya know?

Without a doubt!

Joke that an engineer can appreciate:

How many software engineers does it take to change a lightbulb?
None.

That's a hardware problem!

Now come talk to me when you've done tech support *for* engineers!! LOL They can be the worst. Right up there with lawyers...
^_^

lol
Sounds as if your job is very funny.. but I guess that level of stupidity grates after a few times!
Comedy and tragedy! What more could you ask for? lol

I worked with some engineering students. Fun times! Very smart people.

I had to let someone vent yesterday. It was touch and go there for a minute! But when they finally let me get a word in, I got them up and running and "out the door" quick.
People skillz in tech support are a must. I hate to admit it, but sometimes moreso than tech skillz...

I was *very* shy when I got started with a group like that back in "my day." lol

It did worlds of good for me in opening up and getting a jump start on my new faith.

The first couple times may be rough. Just get to know a few people at first and you'll blend in soon enough!

Will be praying, Ish.
I am sure that it will be great, once you get over the initial hurdle of actually walking in.
Remember, you are a very lovely person, and you'll be a blessing! I find in those situations, it helps to look for someone who is feeling as shy and nervous as I am, and concentrate on trying to make them feel accepted and included.. takes your eyes of yourself and your mind off the fear...

the Calvinism - Arminianism thread is wearing me out, there have been some high tennsions in there, a lot of emotions on both sides

I gotta stay out of it~~It gets me so angry and I don't want to be that way but I tend to look at calvinists like I look at, well, ain't gonna say..I just gotta stay out of it..

Tell ya though Rhamiel, the entire discussion and my working back and forth with it was a great deal of what is leading me toward the Catholic Church so I guess I have that to be thankful for

Well there's custard that's like ice cream and there's custard that's like pudding...so there:wave:
What's the difference?

CC feels like very unfamiliar territory, at the moment :( Think it'll become more accessible once the elections are over?
