  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

But it mostly happens when they're guilty.

I was told that African Americans wind up in jail so often because they plead guilty to get lighter sentences because they can't afford a lawyer to fight the charges. Is that incorrect?

You actually do, since I just told you.
Now, is it incorrect that black people wind up in jail so often because they plead guilty to get lighter sentences because they can't afford a lawyer to fight the charges?

Let’s say that this is true?
Would you have any problem with it, if it were?

That's hardly relevant. Follow the flow of the discussion:
No, that is naive. Why then did the Oathkeepers plead guilty to seditious conspiracy?

People plead guilty all the time as part of a plea-deal if their lawyer is convinced that they'd either lose the case, or that an impartial jury would be hard to come by, or a good deal was enough to satisfy the client. Happens all the time.

But it mostly happens when they're guilty.

People often do plead guilty even if they're not.

While it is true that people often plead guilty when they are not, it is almost entirely poor people who do that not those with lawyers on retainer.
