I don't know how obscure it is, but look at the Quokka! It's the happiest marsupial in the world! That's why everyone likes taking selfies with them.
On the 'weird' front, I love the sadly very endangered Saiga(k) or Kazakh antelope, with their weird wobbly noses that wiggle like they're made out of jelly:
There are only an estimated 50,000 left in the world, after a bacterial infection back in 2010 wiped out roughly 200,000 of them. They cover a grazing area that is as large as the entire country of France, so they're quite hard to find. Efforts to breed them in captivity haven't worked so far, and scientists may run out of time and/or funding before they all die off or are killed (they're also subject to poaching, like every rare animal is).
There's a real good picture, close up, nose front, floating around facebook/ pinterest. Looks almost huggable. Seems the Saiga antelope were mostly wiped out, believe it or not, from (you guessed it, haha) a nose virus.
