I grew up attending an LCMS congregation and an LCMS elementary school. We sang hymns quite often at school (and in church, of course), from the old LCMS hymnal.

Some of my favorites were:
Hark the Voice of Jesus Crying (#496)
For All the Saints Who From Their Labors Rest (#463)
Rock of Ages (#396)
Onward Christian Soldiers (#658)

Oh, and my favorite one at Easter was:
Jesus Christ is Risen Today, Alleluia (#199)

I still like to go to this website and listen hymns from the old LCMS hymnal:
http://www.lutheran-hymnal.com/online/tlh_online.html

How about all of you? What are some of your favorite hymns of yesteryear?

Salvation unto Us has come #377
Savior of the Nations Come #95
Christ, the Life of all the living #151
Christ the Lord is risen today #193
Come, Thou almighty King #239

I have many more. You should check out the new LSB. It is better than both TLH and LW. The hymns are much easier to sing than LW and it is far more user friendly.

So you said you grew up LCMS. What are you now? Why did you leave the Lutheran church?
I attend a Baptist church, though I don't necessarily subscribe to one particular denomination. I do prefer a church that teaches in baptism when a person is older and old enough to place their faith in Christ. I don't believe that babies or young children will be condemned if they haven't yet been baptized.

For more personal reasons, not related to the tenets or creeds of the Lutheran church, I found it difficult to stay interested in the services. The sermons were short and the worship was repetitive (page 5, page 15, page 32, etc). I found my congregation to be somewhat cold as well. Again, these were more personal reasons, but it's why I looked elsewhere.

Order of Matins (front of TLH, p 32ff.)
Oddly enough, even though I prefered the sermons and the hymns to this section of the hymnal, I miss the order of worship from page 5.

Repetitive? Well if you mean that you have the same dailies [kyrie, gloria, salutation, etc] yes those are the same every week, however, the propers are always different. The propers include the collects, prayers, scripture readings and proper preface for Holy Communion.

As for Baptism, Christ told his disciples to baptize ALL nations which includes children. Baptism is not something we do, but something God does through water attached with his word. Baptism is hismeans that he gave us to deliver the salvation won for us on the cross. Children who die without Baptism run the risk of condemnation unless they had absolutely no opportunity to be baptized when they were born.

As for the congregation you were in. I am sorry that you found them so cold. Perhaps your presence might warm them again.

Abide With Me is my absolute favorite.

God's Word is Our Great Heritage is second (I love the harmonies in this song!)

Almighty Fortress

God Be With Us Til We Meet Again

How Great Thou Art

I'm But a Stranger Here

There's so many others, but these probably top my favorites. They're the ones I vote for every year for our song service.

My biggest problem is remembering the names. The music I get down right away, it's the words and the name of the silly thing that troubles me.

Amazing Grace (The story behind it amazing too)
How Great Thou Art (always chokes me up)
Rock Of Ages
A Mighty Fortress
Ash tree... Don't remember the name of the hymn. Um, Sent Forth By God's Blessing?
Blessed Assurance (the story behind this is heart breaking)

Dozens more I can't remember right now.

Just for you Rad...

Get Me To The Church On Time lyrics

Artist Name - My Fair Lady soundtrack

Song Lyrics - Get Me To The Church On Time

Jamie, Harry, Friends There's just a few more hours.

That's all the time you've got. A few more hours

Before they tie the knot.

Doolittle:

There are drinks and girls all over London,

and I've gotta track 'em down in just a few more hours!

I'm getting married in the morning! Ding dong!

The bells are gonna chime. Pull out the stopper!

Let's have a whopper! But get me to the church on time!

I gotta be there in the mornin'

Spruced up and lookin' in me prime.

Girls, come and kiss me;

Show how you'll miss me.

But get me to the church on time!

If I am dancin' Roll up the floor.

If I am whistlin' Whewt me out the door!

For I'm gettin' married in the mornin'

Ding dong! the bells are gonna chime.

Kick up an rumpus But don't lost the compass;

And get me to the church, Get me to the church,

For Gawd's sake, get me to the church on time!

Doolittle and Everyone:
I'm getting married in the morning

Ding dong! the bells are gonna chime.

Doolittle Drug me or jail me, Stamp me and mail me.

All:
But get me to the church on time!

I gotta be there in the morning

Spruced up and lookin' in me prime.

Doolittle:
Some bloke who's able Lift up the table,

All:
And get 'em to the church on time!

Doolittle:
If I am flying Then shoot me down.

If I am wooin',

Get her out of town!

All:
For I'm getting married in the morning!

Ding dong! the bells are gonna chime.

Doolittle:
Feather and tar me;

Call out the Army; But get me to the church.

All:
Get me to the church...

Doolittle:
For Gawd's sake, get me to the church on time!

Harry and Everyone:
Starlight is reelin' home to bed now.

Mornin' is smearin' up the sky. London is wakin'.

Daylight is breakin'. Good luck, old chum,

Good health, goodbye.

Doolittle:
I'm gettin' married in the mornin'

Ding dong! the bells are gonna chime...

Hail and salute me Then haul off and boot me...

And get me to the church, Get me to the church...

For Gawd's sake, get me to the church on time!

I like this one too, but I prefer the Ralph Vaughn Williams tune better than the William Tomer.
However, this hymn is in none of the LCMS hymnals.

I definitely prefer the Tomer version myself. Both can be found in Christian Worship, which is the hymnal that is being used by most WELS churches.

http://www.lutheranmusic.com/library/html/CW/cw327.html This is Tomer's version

http://www.lutheranmusic.com/library/html/CW/cw328.html This is Willams' version

For anyone that wants to compare the two.

That's a hymnal I have yet to purchase. I also do not have the new ELCA hymnal, but I'm not sure I even want that one. ^_^

 That's for everyone. Be Still My Soul is the greatest hymn of all time!!! Oh and also The Lord is my Sheperd, I Shall not Want from the British show The Vicar of Dibley. :)
Be still my soul---yep that my favorite to. Jean Sibelius wrote Finlandia in 1899 and this hymn is taken from that score. It is very sybtle and yet very powerfull. When I play this hymn I start out very softly and then "crescendo" to full organ and it brings tears and gives me goose bumps. Both for the promise of God the patriotic fevor. Very patriotic.

I'd love to hear you play the organ someday.
