I had a memory come to me this Sunday. We sang a hymn that I used the tune of "Oh That The Lord Would Guide My Ways". When I played it for Sunday's service I remembered how my Dad would sing out so loud and strong when we sang that hymn - it must have been one of his favorites. I asked Pastor if we could sing that hymn one of these Sundays.

Be still my soul---yep that my favorite to. Jean Sibelius wrote Finlandia in 1899 and this hymn is taken from that score. It is very sybtle and yet very powerfull. When I play this hymn I start out very softly and then "crescendo" to full organ and it brings tears and gives me goose bumps. Both for the promise of God the patriotic fevor. Very patriotic.

I must say I find Finlandia Hymn waaaay too patriotic to my taste. I consider it a hymn for the glory of fatherland and for a particular political ideology -- on a par with The Internationale as far as hymns go, if you like.

Alas, speaking of patriotic fervour, I get goose bumbs when I hear all those (terribly ;) ) young soldiers in our Defence Forces sing A Mighty Fortress is our God as one (wo)man. :)

One beautiful hymn that comes to mind is Ingemann's Lovely is the Earth, mostly sung at Christmastime.
