As a new believer 40 years ago, and in my teens, I was blown-away when a choir belted out this song. The refrain, "Stayed upon Jehovah, hearts are fully blest, finding as He promised, perfect peace and rest". Prior to giving in to Jesus' call, such a statement would have been totally presumptious. But, there was "perfect peace" in this "honeymoon" stage of my walk. Now, as I weather storms, this song brings peace and reminds me of the Prince of Peace whose Spirit abides with mine.

I have always loved When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, ever since I was a little girl. I love the words which speak so eloquently of my shortcomings and His covering grace and love for me. I am so glad that my son loves this old hymn too.

One of my favorite hymns is "It is Well with My Soul". The words were written by Horatio Gates Spafford in 1873 following a family tragedy in which his four daughters died on a transatlantic voyage. Their ship was struck by another vessel and sank rapidly.


When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well with my soul.

(Refrain) It is well (it is well),
with my soul (with my soul),
It is well, it is well with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,

That Christ hath regarded my helpless estate,

Another favourite hymn for me is Blessed Assurance. :) I was raised in a church where only hymns were sung. Choruses and contemporary Christian music only became part of my life when I was in my 30's.

I love all of those mentioned above. Also "Guide me, O Thou Great Jehovah". Although it's great to hear everyone worshipping by singing it, I also enjoy hearing it performed by a male voice choir to the tune of Cwm Rhondda.
