  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've spent hours researching and reading reviews on various antivirus programs and firewalls. Based on my current research, I would definitely choose McAfee over Norton, but does anyone have thoughts on any of the other antivirus programs... Trend Micro, Hauri, Sophos, Kaspersky, etc. and their effectiveness and ease of use?

Thanks! :)

Myself, I'd choose anything over Norton or McAfee. Both are rather bloated programs.

Kaspersky is midly popular amongst server admins. Myself, I prefer AVG Anti-Virus(freeware!) or PC-Cillin(which cost $20 last time I checked). All three are nice and small, and are fairly frequently updated.

As for firewalls, again, I'd choose just about anything over McAfee or Norton. ZoneAlarm is very good, and free. Kerio is very good also and is free, but not as easy to use.

If you have a high speed connection, there is only one solution, and that is a good router.

If you are on dial up, you don't need a firewall at all.

Software firewalls are a waste of time and create many problems.
well I don't get the point why on dial up you wont need a firewall, I am on a dial up and I can stay chatting and online for hours, and that would be a great risk if there is no firewall

Generally true, but I've fixed one computer so far that was hacked into... and it had a modem.

That was enough to convince me.

The whole reason I got Norton Internet Security was because I was being hit constantly on my dial up connection and that was when I was only online for maybe 2 hours a day at most......now I won't have any of my computers online without one......I have been using Norton Internet Security and I have not had any problems with it at all and when I was building systems it was one of the things that automatically went onto them and no one has ever had any complaints with it, actually they all tell me that they have less problems now then they did before.
