Her career would have been shot, but it wouldn't have come to affect so many other people like it did.

That alone is enough to indict the people who started this movement. Prior to the hoards descending upon her, she did nothing at all to warrant her career being ruined.

"Journalist having an affair with someone they're covering" is going to make news, and the involved parties are going to have their careers damaged no matter what.

For the rest?

"Forget it Jake; it's Chinatown."

1.) The charge was bogus. His only coverage of her predated their relationship.

2.) Even if it were true, nobody in the games industry gives two rips about that. So long as she’s not violating an NDA, it would only be a conflict of interest for the reporter, not the designer.

Conflicts of interest should be reported openly. Especially if people make buying decisions based on their opinions.

I'm an entertainment writer, and as part of it have had to recuse myself from covering a specific movie because it was based on a real-life event I was tangentially involved in.

I've also had to issue a standard disclaimer when it comes to "religious" movies to the effect that my personal religious beliefs aren't impacting my review one way or another.

It's ethics 101.

This is why I can only shake my head at an incident that took place in the lead-up to "Ghostbusters 2016": a popular online movie reviewer said that he wasn't sure he could separate his nostalgia for the original films from whatever the new one was going to be and so he wasn't going to review it since he couldn't be sure he could review it fairly.

Cue the "woke" crowd bombarding him with hate because he was such a "bigot" for not going to see it.

The way the conflicts of interest work in this case is that the reporter could be biased in their reporting and the game dev could be leaking confidential information to the reporter. There is no conflict for the dev with regards to biased reporting and there is no conflict for the reporter with regards to leaks.

If people had a beef with (allegedly) biased reporting, then the appropriate target of their ire would've been the journalists, not the dev they were (allegedly) favoring. Going after Quinn more than anybody else showed how disingenuous their complaints were.
