If I say the river in the garden of Eden was a psychological allusion to an ever changing world I would be using dumb words to wave away the reality that there was a river in Eden. No, it was language that would have been understood by the people of the day. They weren’t “dumb peasants”, but their understanding was limited. For example, they thought that bats were birds.
