I think Ben is considered an expendable figurehead and Richard is really in charge. He is the one who helped Ben to come to their side in the first place. I wouldn't be surprised if Locke joins Richard and his group, and Ben ends up staying with the losties. I'm guessing Alex and Karl will probably stay with them too, so that should be interesting.

Random thought: it's been said that Michael Emerson (Ben) originally only signed on for a few episodes. However, his character seems more significant than one merely created because they found a good actor. I wonder if some of the attributes Ben has (such as his leadership role, his relationship with Jacob, etc.) were originally a part of another character such as Richard, and they shuffled the roles around some? Maybe the season 2 finale was originally going to be Richard (or someone else) emerging as the leader, and they gave that role to the person everyone liked?

Just an insignificant thought that occured to me.
