Hi. I just wanted to note that I tried to follow the paper trail that Carl left in post 14, but was unable to link Eliyahu ben David to Steve Butt. I did look up Steve Butt on google, and a bunch of unrelated entries popped up, so I'd just like to remind everyone that there are often many people who have names similar or identical to each other, and just because something pops up on a search doesn't mean that it is the something we are looking for.

If I'm allowed, to 'butt' in here.

Here is a site that uses him as a reference to their page. And states this:

Eliyahu ben David (Stephen S. Butt), Tsiyon News, Tsiyon Messianic Radio Newsletter, Vol.4.09

I was just looking at the same thing. The site is full of some pretty weird stuff, but they definitely reference him in footnote #9.

Thanks. That wasn't one of the links that came up when I did a search, but even so, googling Stephen Butt gives a lot of non-related links, and just because all those links comes up, it doesn't mean that they are all related to Eliyahu ben David.

I already wrote the forum about this but they told me they don't censor this kind of unsubstantiated gossip against people, which really surprised me, being a Christian site and all. But whatever. Anyhow, I know Eliyahu, he is Jewish enough - just not a rabbinic type of Jew. And just to give some of you a tip that will help you out with Jewish people, it really is anti-Semitic to infer someone is not a Jew just because they don't follow rabbinic customs or some Gentile stereotype of what a Jew is supposed to be. Jews come in a lot of different flavors, just like everybody else. As a Messianic with a lot of Messianic Jewish friends, a lot of them find the kind of speculation and stereotyping like in this thread anti-Jewish and, no offense, ignorant. In case you haven't got a clue yet, Eliyahu is not the guy from some obscure link, wherever that came from. Eliyahu has lived in Texas for years and has had many of his radio listeners visit him and Dawn at their home. All of them will back me up - they are completely lacking a scandalous lifestyle. Nothing there but a family devoted to Christ and His Word. Why would anyone try to tear down a guy like that? True Spirit-led Bible teachers have a lot of enemies. My advice is this: If you want to know who Eliyahu is and what he is about listen to his program for a while. After you listen long enough you will figure out what all his regular listeners already nkow. No one can fake what this guy has got.

I don't think there is too much doubt it's the same person

Tsiyon Messianic Radio is his program.

Anyhow, I know Eliyahu, he is Jewish enough - just not a rabbinic type of Jew.
Can you explain what you mean? What is "Jewish enough"? I'm not sure I understand.

I didn't read fully, but skimmed the entire article. Sounds like Judah/Ephraim (2-House) Theology and pre-tribulation doctrine. But you're right Chava, some strange stuff. (A lot of the links in the left-hand column went to error pages.)

I think that what people look for, is similarities to what they already have come to conclusions on, and how it compares with what he is teaching... I do not think that they are so much concerned with his sincerity nor the fact that he is living and breathing in the light that he has.. From what you have described here would have been something I could have said similar to about 30 years ago.. he just might be a signpost of the light back when he first received it..

That is how church become established... get light .. build around it... contain it.. own it.. close the doors to any more light... and call everyone to see that you have God contained within.... It happens in every generation..

Here's some answers to your points. "Jewish enough" means he's a Jew. It is really pretty outrageous to question anyone's stated ethnicity. It's arrogant to do that, just for starters.

Tsiyon Messianic Radio is Eliyahu's site. The linked page this reference is on is NOT his site. The reference itself on that page is bogus, since it does not include a date, indicating a real newsletter. Exactly which Tsiyon News is this referring to? Look it up in the real Tsiyon News archive at the Tsiyon Newsletter Archive at tsiyon(dot)org(slash)newsletter and produce it if it's real. It isn't there. This reference itself is bogus and may very well be planted just to fool people.

Finally, since the linked site is not Eliyahu's site, but contains only one bogus reference to a non-existent newsletter alleged to have been from him, then that webpage tells you a sum total of '0' about Eliyahu.

By what standards? People have all kinds of beliefs as to "who is a Jew"

Not outrageous or arrogant at all. With people presenting themselves as
Jews when they are not, I think it's fine to question some one's assertion
that they are a Jew. We used to take the word of someone when they
said they were a Jew, because there was no benefit to claim to be
one, and there were a lot of disadvantages.
That is not true any more....for some reason all kinds of non-Jews claim
to be Jews.

I also don't think it's inappropriate for people to question the credentials of anyone teaching or holding
themselves out as an expert.

The reason being for that, Chava, is to pull the wool over our (Gentile Messianics) eyes. (Especially if their website offers books, CDs for sale.)
That's why whenever I hear a so-called "Jewish" Messianic Rabbi teaching something I've never heard before, I run straight to Yonah or you (and 1 other Jewish friend) for clarification. We MGs can be a gullible bunch of people.
It would really behoove (sp?) us to be a bit more wary of those caliing themselves Jews. Many Gentiles who have come to MJ faith wrongly think of themselves now as "Jews" (sometimes quite innocently, but still in error).

And unfortunately not so innocent...twice we have had Messianics come into
our shul and try to pass themselves off as Jews. While we didn't ask them to
leave, they were pretty much shunned and left on their own. Non-Jews are
always welcome to attend and we welcome them, but those who are dishonest....that's another story :(

Hi there Jack. I think that there is a whole lot of steam being blown off here for the wrong reasons. May I ask how you came to join this forum and your second post was about this man you know? Does someone scan the internet to see if anyone is talking about him, since this thread is tagged with his name?

As far as the reference, I posted this because it was all I could find in reference to what another new poster , who popped up here all of a sudden, like yourself, posted about him.

If you know this man personally perhaps you can tell us what his real name is? I'm sure he wasn't born in the US with a name like Eliyahu ben David. It may be his bar mitzvah name and used for aliyah but not on his license unless he had it legally changed.

Here's his 'bio' from his site

Who is Eliyahu ben David?
Faithful listeners of Eliyahu ben David’s weekly radio program, On The Road To Tsiyon, will tell you Eliyahu is an anointed teacher of the Scriptures. Eliyahu ben David is the founder and director of Tsiyon Messianic Radio, which broadcasts to listeners in over 65 countries. Tsiyon Messianic Radio is known for sharing hard-hitting truth that simply is not broadcast anywhere else.
Eliyahu ben David’s insights into the depths of the Scriptures have thrilled Bible students for over 25 years. His vast ministry experience includes teaching in home fellowships, churches of various denominations, conventions and other large gatherings, am, fm, shortwave, satellite and internet radio, podcasting, blogging, and cutting edge internet venues. Eliyahu ben David has personally ministered on four continents and works tirelessly at uniting people of like Scriptural faith from all over the world.
Eliyahu has recently finished authoring the first volume of the seven volume The Messianic Revelation Series. Previously he has authored two other books: Holy Order Restored and Holy Time. Residing in Texas, he is also a successful father of five home-schooled children. As a Spirit-led Scripture researcher and teacher, Eliyahu ben David has discovered truth that will amaze you and will uplift your life.

Sad to say it's Christianese for someone who seems to know what they're talking about because of the wow factor. People have no idea what anointed really means.

Makes sense....some people are really taken by the "wow factor".

From a podcast from his wife Dawn (no last name) This is the my transcription of the beginning of it.

"On the road to Tzion radio.....................here's the voice of Tzion in exile, Eliyahu ben David"

(Sounding very scripted)..............Tzion beginnings...........We've been hearing from our listeners wanting to know how we began.

"But first a short break"

Dawn: "It is time for a historic meeting to take place, for the first time in well over 1,000 years.
I'm talking about the believing house of David family reunion and counsel meeting to be held in 2009. All believing descendents of King David living anywhere in the world are invited to participate in the meeting. All such persons and anyone else interested in this event can get more information online. Just take the Tent of David link from our Tzion website at www.tsiyon.org. Stop by for more information about the believing house of David Family reunion and council meeting today. "

:o

Dawn: "Welcome Back, Well

Let's start from the very beginning. Ah, to get started,
What can you tell us about your childhood?

ben David: My childhood, well as ah, a child I was born into a family that lived in the remote woods of Maine .....

Dawn: In the United States?

ben David: In the United States,uh, in a two room shack with no running water, no lights. My Dad cut wood uh, and I thought it was the most wonderful place in the world.

Dawn: Around family?

ben David: It was such a special place, I remember the summertime, um, I'm talking being just little, like two years old.

Dawn: Un ha

ben David: and walking out in the field out around the house and seeing all the black eyed susans growing and the butterflies flitting from flower to flower, I mean it was really a beautiful place, it was, that was really the place where I first remember meeting G0d. I had a real sense of G0d being with me, and being like my playmate, out there in the field.

Dawn: so a sense of Awe at what he's created?

ben David:Yes but more than that it was really a sense of His presence from the begining from what I can remember. We didn't stay there, we did move eventually, to a place that actually had electric lights, (laughs) so that was kinda interesting. My Mom had really a great love for G0d and for the Scriptures. She used to read to me from the Bible.

Dawn:Um Huh

ben David: From the time I was very young, I wanted to read the Bible for myself

Dawn: So it really stirred something up inside of you, a desire

ben David: It did, I started reading very early and I had a passion for the Bible. And I used to talk to people about it all the time.

He doesn't sound very Jewish to me..................................

Opps, well I guess I was right, it seems his mothers friends used to call him the little minister (not Rabbi). ;)

"Whenever they saw me I was talking about the Bible. "

His family was part of a religious 'sect' that didn't believe in a personal relationship with G-d.
