  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Just so all of you can appreciate what ebola is--its a Biosafety Level 4 Agent and only 4 hospitals in the nation are really set up to deal with it. Yet, Obama WON'T stop plane flights FROM ebola infected countries. He WON'T close our porous Southern Border. And he IS sending 4000 military over there to "fight" ebola. (Want to bet that at least one will become infected there then come home to infect his family and everyone he comes in contact with while waiting for medical care from the VA that never comes.)

Where shall we quarantine international travelers for 22 days each, AMDG? Have you ever sat at Reagan or LAX or OHare and watched the planes come in? Do you understand the numbers of people you're talking about? Do you understand that these quarantine centers you advocate for require infrastructure, staffing, maintenece and stocking and restocking constantly and forever in times withoud epidemics if they are to be succesful? Are you angry that these centers were not built by Reagan? By anyone except Obama?

You're talking about an effective end to international travel (because we cannot practically and never have been able to track en masse or control where individuals go after leaving the United States) that would very quickly snowball into an economic disaster. A global epidemic would result into an economic disaster too, of course, but I'm not sure such a thing could be stopped.

I happen to know a little bit about the ocean liner era, and what we are doing today is very much like the quarantines of old. International passengers are cursly monitored for signs of disease and then left to go on their way. In the old days, only the obviously sick or those who sailed with someone who was obviously sick were subject to strict quarantine. We never at any point had anything resembling a 22 day strict quarantine and with far more international travelers today than we've ever had before, we have no place and no staff to perform such a task.

It seems to me that there are some "Chrisitians" on this board who are being rather cowardly.

Ebola is not going to be a problem in the US. Every expert on the subject in the country is saying this.

And

just a reminder

When Jesus gave us our marching orders on the Sermon on the Mount I believe that healing the sick and comforting the suffering was, like, a deal with Him.

It's easy when it doesn't cost you anything. We separate the wheat from the chaff

...the goats from the sheep

...boys from the Boy Scout.

(I could go on making this list....but won't)

When it actually effect YOU in some way.

Cowboy up.

It's what Jesus wants.

I suggest we ship them all to within 5 miles of AMDG. She seems very concerned about it so obviously she'd welcome such a situation.

Wow, we can't stop 150 some odd patients a day from air travel FROM the effected countries? (Other countries have already taken that common sense safety approach and stopped air travel.) We can't stop possible ebola infection by finally closing the border (without the usual political "we can't do that") It's a HEALTH ISSUE now--NOT POLITICAL and stop making it political.

And BTW, I have FAMILY in Texas where there is now ebola. I also live no more than 10 miles from where folks who have broken immigration law are being warehoused. I'm also the wife of a military retiree (and we know that thousands of untrained military are being sent to "fight" ebola in Liberia and WILL bring it home to family and the military family.

No, I don't welcome the idiocy of not stopping entrance of ebola into the U.S. And I am already affected--family in Texas, military family being purposely exposed. And I dare say, if the CDC is right, YOU will be effected too (and so will our economy) by Christmas.

And I don't think Jesus wants us to act stupidly and risk our lives. May I remind you folks that ebola kills 90% of the time and agonizingly too. High fever. Projectile vomiting (of blood). Diarrhea. Blood coming out of every orifice of the body--even the eyes. Great there's a 21 incubation period, but once the ebola symptoms make there appearance, well, hope you've made out your will. And realize that you WILL die alone since no one can even touch you without contracting the disease too.

I take it that you are hoping that the CDC is wrong--AGAIN (first time it was when it was said that ebola wouldn't reach our shores, then it was that it wouldn't spread--that the hospitals could contain, even without protocols and Hazmat suits, and then that the nurse caring for the ebola patient wouldn't contract it because she HAD taken precautions.)

That sounds terrible. Can you point to a thread from before this outbreak in which you called for the funding of quarantine centers? It seems to me like you're being an opportunist here and calling for preparation after-the-fact, exactly what you're accusing the CDC of. I might be wrong. If I am, please show me.

Okay, here's a little story that I think SHOWS that a NO FLY FROM ebola infected areas WOULD INDEED stop the spread. Say that that there's a "meet and greet the parents" at a school. The teacher has prepared little name cards for the parents. After a little talk the teacher lets the parents know that there are snacks in the back and encourages all to mingle. After the little snack time the teacher told the parents that she put a little sticker on the back of the little name cards and wondered who has it. One person raised their hand. The teacher pointed out that the sticker represents that he had a particular communicable disease and said that everyone who shook hands with him or touched him (or whatever he touched) has it too and whoever touched that person and so on and so) has it too. In fact, the teacher said that EVERYONE now has this communicable disease. Only one person who abstained from the snack time and the mingling and stayed by himself could say with any certainty that he did not have the communicable disease as well. NOW THAT'S what a NO FLY FROM ebola infected countries would do. No one would be exposed to the disease, so no one could "catch it". We wouldn't have to rely on people's honesty--"Nope, I never came in contact so I should be allowed to fly" said with fingers crossed. NO ONE FROM the infected area would be allowed. No disease. No chance of exposing others to the deadly disease.

Surely you people should understand that. You all speak of the settlers killing off Native American Indians by stories of bringing the Indians disease to which they were not immune. The Native Americans were fine, then the disease was introduced and they were dead.

Surely you people know that Quarantine was used in Ellis Island and the one on the West Coast. If a person was sick, he was held until he was well. He wasn't allowed entry into the country until WE were sure that he was no longer a danger. No chance of infecting others.

Surely you people know that Quarantine was used to stop the spread of disease in the past.

It's only rational.

Your analogy is flawed in so, so many ways. People with working knowledge of the disease are saying that a no-fly wouldn't work. You don't know more than them. You don't understand the virus better than they do. Putting "rational" or "common-sense" in front of it doesn't suddenly make you a genius.

Mike, don't you remember what our illustrious president said?

"Never let a crisis go to waste."

AMDG is simply employing the tactics used by the best, n'est ce pas?

I agree with your assessment. If Obama were to take advantage of a crisis for political gain, that would be a vile move on his part. I don't believe him to be above such and I did not vote for him. I do (foolishly, I admit) expect better of people in Christian webforums.

Mike, don't you remember what our illustrious president said?

"Never let a crisis go to waste."

First of all it's "Never let a good crisis go to waste"

Second:

This quote has been attributed, alternately, to :

Winston Churchill
Rahm Emmanuel
and
Naomi Klein (who claims she was actually quoting Paul Weyrich)

But it was never attributed to any President

Your analogy is flawed in so, so many ways. People with working knowledge of the disease are saying that a no-fly wouldn't work. You don't know more than them. You don't understand the virus better than they do. Putting "rational" or "common-sense" in front of it doesn't suddenly make you a genius.

Name one way the analogy is flawed. No flying OUT of the infected area to an uninfected populace equals NO possibility of infecting anyone else. And yes, that IS common-sense.

Quite sure the Native American Indians wish that the settlers had kept their disease to themselves. Might mean that some of the tribes would still exist. And it might mean that Liberals wouldn't feel so guilty all the time.

For years that policy of quarantining worked wonders for immigration on Ellis Island (and is the one on the West Coast known as Angel Island?). No one who was sick was allowed into the U.S. And there are documentaries about this, if one cares to look.

And my goodness, don't schools ever teach about quarantines and how they worked. One person comes down with smallpox or Scarlet Fever and the whole family was under the yellow quarantine flag. Heck, even old television shows, besides the old books, speak of it.

Quarantine was a little like the advertisement for the "roach hotel" where they go in, but not out. The germs simply are not allowed out.

Seems a LOT better than "well, one in a hundred deaths is acceptable" and "we figure that by Christmas we'll have thousands infected". My gosh what are we trying to do? Infect people--or actually stop the spread? Are we trying to repeat that Bubonic Plague that decimated most of the people in the western countries? THAT makes no sense at all. I don't care how many alphabet soup letters someone has after his name--it doesn't mean that he has an iota of common sense.
