  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

No. It's a hallmark quality of being a card carrying creationist.
Plus:
Do those self-appointed "great minds" know the difference between "results of a study" and "its representation in a non-scientific newspaper?". Apparently not.
Do they know the difference between the content of an article and a placative headline? Apparently not.

What card?
I didn't get a card.
Where do i get one?
Did Jesus have a card? He taught that the Bible was true as written. Where did he get His card?

That would put a whole new spin on "What's in your wallet?"

I don't know, but if we made a mistake, whose fault is that?

Maybe if ... you know ... you guys would like ... um ... just answer the questions, then we could maybe prevent some mistakes from happening and put this stuffy thread to rest, eh?
Unlike lock-step religion, rational humans like to discuss the details. It's often that understanding results in comprehending the nuances.

Maybe you just read the memo as unattentively as you read the article you were posting?
Oh, I read the article, did you?
Did you also see where I said i wondered when it would be used as a source? I had no idea I would be the one citing it.
The article throws ice water on the idea that prayer is effective. I predict more of these will come out.
I predict that before too long science will have discredited much of what we believe on faith. There are 333 miracles in the Bible, none of which can be verified by science. In fact, by their very definition the claimed miracles could not possibly have happened as claimed.

So your answer to AV´s second question is "Yes"?

See post 13.
Oh, sorry, I missed that (or forgot it). My apologies!
Since I see no way for science to rule out the efficiacy of prayers, would you like to walk me through this process?

Let´s take the example of a girl who (a couple of years) posted here and told us: She had prayed to God asking for her parents to give her the pink t-shirt for Christmas that she had asked them for, and, alas, her parents gave it to her for Christmas. Prayer answered.

I fail to see how science, applying the scientific method, can rule out that God was arranging things behind the scenes, answering her prayer.
Since, as I´m sure, you are way more savvy in matters of science and the scientific method than I am, please help me understanding how science can conclusively rule out that God answered a prayer here. To me, as a non-believer, such a disproof would come in incredibly handy. :)

Two easy questions:

1. Can science rule out Puff the magic dragon (or is it Pete?) ... whatever.

Can it rule out a literal interpretation of Puff the Magic Dragon? Yes. The story contains checkable facts.

Can it rule out the existence, somewhere in the universe, of a creature that we would call a dragon which identifies itself as "Puff"? No. Such a creature could exist on an exoplanet, and we are currently unable to rule out such a situation.

2. Can science rule out the efficacy of prayer?

Well, we've tried it, and studies don't show any advantage to it. So if God is listening, he's not doing what people pray for.

I mean, folks have been praying for world peace for how long?

There will be no world peace until the Prince of Peace comes back.

Feel free to riddle me this.
Riddle me this:

You're expecting FedEx to arrive and bring you that secret decoder ring you've been wanting for a week now.

When you get home from work, what do you ask?

Did my ring arrive, or was FedEx here today?

Which one?
