And as to Tanis's "run in", that tick me off to no end. That is not the way he should have died! After all the heroic thing he did, he gets stabbed in the back by some half-naked barbarien!!
Okay, rant over. Just had to get that off my chest. :breaths deeply:

Yeah, a hero of the lance, with his guard down. At least when Luarana goes out there is a Giant dragon and magic swords 'n stuff.

Christian Falangist, what books have you read, have you read the book (I can't remember the name, it's on the book list I posted...) that is about Kendermore? Might be called Kendermore... lol.

hmmm... You've got your work cut out for you. This book isn't the best of Dragonlance, obviously, but you can start out by putting down some raw descriptions of the characters, and take the plot chapter-by-chapter. If you can, re-read it.

I don't have a copy in front of me, but some points to note would be the cliche' of the novel, and the combat descriptions, which almost seem to come directly from Dungeons and Dragons, and run choppy. IMO, DL never quite got combat right.

Good overall question would be why in the world was it successful enough to spawn some 80+ novels?

I am in the process of re-reading it and I its amazing the things you notice the second time around! :) I see what you mean by the choppy battles, now that I think about it. I think it gets better as the series goes on but I have read better! :sorry:
I like what you said at the end though. Why DID dragonlance become SO big? It might be something good for us to discuss here.
What do you guys think?

Sincerely,
Koryu

I am guessing Dragonlance was successful because it was the first, the original book series spun off from a role playing game. So, the players probably first bought the books and told other people and they just kept rolling. I think people like dragons a lot, too.;)

so...if i were to start, do i start with Dragons of Autumn Twilight? or...where?
which is the best?

The Dragonlance Series starts with Dragons of Autumn Twilight. Which is the best though? I like the Legends Trilogy. Go Raistlin! ^_^

You will definately want that base in the chronicles (autumn twilight), I like the war of souls the best, Mashal Medan is great. Look back in this thread for the book list I posted, look for Margaret Weis as an author, that is what is considered the main series.

Good luck!

I was browsing in a used bookstore when I came across a relic, a 1987 edition of The Art of Dragonlance ! It has the original four color roughs used to promote the series and some great history in it. If anyone wants individual scans I can send them in PMs, I don't know about copyrights and that stuff or I would post them here.

It has for example, the progression of Tas from an eight year old girl-looking character to the teenager that was in the 1988 calander. It has art of all minor characters, with emphasis on Raistlin and dragons.

Cool Tier, sounds awesome. I never was a huge fan of Larry Elmore's artwork, I like that newest covers the best, but it sounds like you discovered a great find.(a relic, like you said, for sure ;) )

On a side note, thanks for reviving this thread! lol It seems that we just can't let it die! ^_^

Hi Ceris. Any specifics?

-The Art of DRAGONLANCE-

Remember that each one is property of the Author listed.

From left to Right.

----------------------------------------
"Flight of the Dragon Orb", oils, by Keith Parkinson, from the 1987 DRAGONLANCE calender:

Note: Flint and Sturm.

----------------------------------------
"What do you mean, we're lost?", acrylics, by Keith Parkinson, from the 1987 DRAGONLANCE calender:

(NOTE: painting ran right into the binding, To see it all I would of had to dismantle the book. Aside from the VERY cool Draconian that is cut off at the middle, it is a good painting:

P.S.-- Notice the different colors of the draconians. The color and physical/mental attributes of Draconians is from the eggs of the dragons used ot make them. Gold dragons are flightless magic users! Who knew?

----------------------------------------
"The Ransom Note", oils, by Larry Elmore, from the 1988 DRAGONLANCE calender:

NOTE: Tas, Luarana and Flint. This is a horrible depiction of the Golden generel IMO, I will put up a better one when I scan some more.

----------------------------------------
"The Last Spell of Fistandantilus", oils, by Keith Parkinson, from the 1987 DRAGONLANCE calender.

Note: One of the most intense battles of Dragonlance. Notice the staff. This is an early painting.
