  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Has anyone heard of this game?
I just invented it. It's where you get really tired of people who watch anything anime just because it's anime, or people who obsess entirely too much over certain anime - especially when they do not even understand the base ideas of Japanese culture.

I know I didn't really invent it, but I made it sound fun. Like..like a game.

First response: Invader Pichu’s avatar expresses my feelings exactly!

Second response: “Don’t feed the Troll”!

Third response: If we need a life for liking anime so much, then you REALLY need a life for taking the time to tell us we need a life…. Ummm, I think that’s how it works!

Forth response: I don’t like all anime, I think if you actually read any of the topics here you would realize other people have likes and dislikes. Take “The Wannabees” for example, man, that anime sucked! (in my OP)

Fifth response: No obsession here, like anything else it is a hobby; do you not have any hobbies? It isn’t just about Japanese; it is about the style for most people. Though I have to admit I do like things about their culture and art. And most people here have more than a base of understanding of the culture along with knowing the language.

So take that Einstein!! :p

It's kind of ironic that you did the same thing you accused me of, only in a different way. You replied to a topic that was not aimed at you, as if it was. If you are not obsessed with anime, then this thread was not aimed at you.

I am not a troll. I was just talking with a Japanese friend of mine last night, and we were talking about people who watch anything anime just because it's anime.
I was actually thinking about my ex-girlfriend when I wrote this.

I post entirely (almost, a few in gaming I guess, and my introduction thread) in the Anime section of this board. I am completely obsessed with some anime.
Does that sound like someone who would knock anime fans?

I think you both misunderstood this post, and got way to offensive.
:(

Not to mention, your own post was rather insulting. I never told anyone they did not have a life, nor did I speak in such a tone as you did, further insinuating I should do something involving your buttocks (re: invader pichu's avatar).

You know nothing about me.

Perhaps you should not be so quick to judge others.

"Oh, but you judged otaku!" one might say.

For a group of people who take their name from a repulsive class of Japanese people and use it with pride, I'd say I'm going easy on them. Also, I am judging no one person. If one denies that they are a part of those who I posted this about, then they are not. The people I'm talking about would generally respond something like this:

"=U.U= baka baka tori-chan i lub anime so much! *glompglompanime!!!*"

Alright that's enough with the flames people. I am not seeing a real point to this thread, and with the mockery that is going on I don't think some members do either. I will leave this thread open for the time being, but if any more flaming posts are found, it will be closed. Thank you.

puppy..the purpose of the thread was not mockery, but rather to discuss a growing problem in america: the Otaku.
Otaku is not a good thing. At all. They are social outcasts, failures, usually considered perverts. Americans are embracing the title without any knowledge of Japanese culture.

It was late when I wrote that last night, so I didn't completely put my thoughts out as I intended.
If you look, I'm sure you must agree that I was the one who was flamed here, not the one doing the trolling nor the flaming.

Thanks for moderating this thread.

So, what do you all think about otaku? I think it's something that needs to be done away with in the anime-fan community, because it's really giving people who like anime shows a bad name.

I agree. Down with it. I've been trying to tell my friends that's it's really an insult to call yourself an otaku [especially a guy :o ] coz in Japan they look down on otakus. Those are those really perverted men that pray to those anime girls thinking that they are real and things like that. It's crazy. But then again if you go to the conventions, you see there are alot of crazy otakus [the men :o ]. I see these men dressed up like sailor moon with hairy legs :sigh: it's scary. Now more parents are bringing their kids to the conventions and then they get to see that?? It's crazy and it gives anime fans a bad name. :(

LOL I remember when I used to have my own comic book company and I went to Michigan to promote the comics. These two older men come to our table to ask our artist if he would draw Sailor Moon. :)

I was excited since this was my first convention to promote a comic [and my first company actually] so I wanted to get into discussions about sailor moon since I like them too. Oh forget it.... I don't know how they knew, but they told me from the day they were born [the girls], what they like, their brast size, whatever it was that you didn't want to hear, they told me. I got sick after that and had to leave the table coz they were just going on and on and telling me and my crew that we don't know anything about anime.

hmm...

Fifth response: No obsession here, like anything else it is a hobby; do you not have any hobbies? It isn’t just about Japanese; it is about the style for most people. Though I have to admit I do like things about their culture and art. And most people here have more than a base of understanding of the culture along with knowing the language.

I just wanted to point out, I did not accuse anyone here of not having more than a base understanding. I'm sorry that you took my post in that way, though if you read my post it was, in no way, aimed toward the people at this board nor did I ever insinuate that people here had a lack of understanding Japanese culture.

My post was aimed toward americans/westerners who do not understand japanese culture (not who do not know about it, but who do not UNDERSTAND it), but continue to try and act is if they are japanese.

Understanding Japanese culture is a key to almost every un-dubbed anime out there. There are numerous things in anime that just do not make sense without understanding Japanese culture - even things as simple as the reaction characters have to things people say and do.

In Naruto, for instance, a lot of westerners would not understand the humongous insult of being called a "drop-out."
In america, a drop-out is just a guy who was too bummed up on drugs and such to finish school, and is even the 'cool guy' in some cultures (1950s american rock'n'roll culture, for instance).
In Japan, to drop out is to fail. To fail, is to die. Failure is not accepted in Japan. It has one of the highest teen suicide rates in the country, for if you fail your exam, chances are you don't want to live with the shame.

It is these kinds of things that a lot of westerners cannot understand, because we all have a 'dust yourself off and dry your eyes, try again' sort of mentallity.

So, in Naruto, when Neji is going on and on about drop-outs, that is a very japanese mindset and the ideas there require an understanding of Japanese people to grasp the real value of it.

My point was that I am tired of people who think they're huge japanese fans because they can say "=U.U= baka baka tori-chan naruto-chan sugoi kuwaii kekekekekek~~~!"

One last thing: the style is a part of the Japanese culture, and to truly appreciate it one should have some understanding of the Japanese. that's all.

whoa, i rambled.

Every time I hear "otaku," I immediately think of Densetsu no Otaku, one of the top Capcom vs SNK 2 players in Japan... ^_^
I'm pretty weird. Competitive gaming will do that kind of thing to you.

In any case. I agree that there are a LOT of people who will watch and like almost anything provided it comes from Japan, somehow.

Mostly, I totally agree that to truly appreciate a lot of the depth of some anime, it's a good idea to learn about the culture.

Then again, I don't think it takes that much Japanese culture to appreciate the meaning behind something like "Grave of the Fireflies." Sure, there's other things, but the important message gets across.

Wannabe "otaku" may be annoying, but they're not some threat to the reputation of anime fans or anything. What I'd like to know is why anime fans would care about their reputation so much? The way I see it, wannabe "otaku" are in it for the reputation, or at least the fitting into a subculture, more than anything else...

Hmmm, I will admit I get obsessed with anime sometime. I have seen pictures of those men, and I am disturbed. It's one thing to cosplay as male characters, but not female characters. Last year, me and a couple buddies dressed up as characters from Yugioh and went to a convention. We felt a little silly, but we had fun anyway. I dressed up as Bandit Keith, and my best friend went as Kaiba. I would never get to the point that "Otakus" do though.

Perhaps I'm strange, but I don't see a problem with cosplaying characters of another gender. But 40 year old guys cosplaying sailor moon? Creeeeeeepy.
