IMO, a national id would be preferable over using our SSN's a default id number. Also, it would have been far more efficient to produce one, secure national id number over forcing all 50 states to up Drivers License ID security requirements after 9/11 (a process that is still in progress....).

Probably wind up being cheaper and more efficient than trying to inter-coordinate 50 different DMV/licensing systems as well.

Well, it depends which party introduces the legislation, I'm guessing. If Obama did it, it would be a clear sign that the apocalypse was on it's way. If Trump does it, it's just good sense.

We're all going to end up with it anyway, and it will be the fault of the religious right and anti immigrant/racist folks. Right now they want to label and tag "illegals". The problem is, who is going to voluntarily submit to that? So to be a Good American, a REAL American, you will need to prove it, so I'm waiting for someone to come forward with the idea for us to be micro chipped or have a national id leading to microchips (once the ids can be faked) anyway. After all if you have nothing to hide you don't mind being identified, right? Hate will be our downfall. Just watch.

Actually, I didn’t need to update my passport. I have several forms of “Real ID”.

A Passport, an enhanced Michigan driver’s license, a Passport card, a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC card), a Retired military ID card, a DOD Common Access Card, A National Guard Common Access card, and a Merchant Mariner Credential.

I can shop anywhere I want to.

I needed a credit card to buy groceries. It is the card without a photo on it.
