  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Does anyonyone use the crate for their doggies? Do you crate your dog on a regular basis like when you're at work? How long do you leave your dog in the crate at one time? My dog has been crated since we got her as a pup. When we get dressed for work or church or whatever, my dog goes in her crate and lies down knowing we're getting ready to go out. It's her own little "cave". My family is going on vacation this week so it's just me at home but I have to work so I need to leave her in there for about 8 or 9 hours. I know they say a dog feels safer when in their own crate when no one is home but to me it seems way too long to leave her in there. Does anyone else crate there dog 8 or more hours? We have crated her that long before but only for one day every once in a while. This will be for 5 days in a row. My vet says she'll be OK, I just feel bad leaving her in there that long. She'll get a good walking and playtime when I get home from work. We've never left her in the house alone uncrated for more than 20 minutes either. What are your experiences?

I always crate my dogs when I'm not home. Much safer for them since I don't need to come home to find them choking on something. I leave for work at 7am and don't get home until 6-6:30, so that's quite a while there. My husband stops at home on his lunch when he can, but if he doesn't it's not a big deal. If your dog isn't used to it, that can cause some stress, but for only 5 days, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Your dog will survive, I promise, and with lots of play time, probably won't even notice the difference.

Well one of my dogs (i have 4) is a crate dog. She loves the crate. When she was a puppy, we used to leave her in her crate for full days while we went to theme parks she was fine. I'm sure your dogs will be fine. Although if you have one which has an s every once in a while he or she might go in the crate. Just expect them to be really excited when you get home.

I do hope you are all talking about close to room size crates and not shipping size crates. What is the reason you have never left her alone in the house? Has she done something in the past? I have never crated any of my dogs in their own home. If you have to leave your dog alone for a long period of time how about a pet sitter? For one dog it is between 10 and 12 dollars for a visit. They can let them out for awhile and play with them. Here where I live we have a place where they have doggie daycare for people who work. They drop their dogs off before work and pick them up after just like the kids. It is 16 dollars a day and it is not kenneling. They interact with other dogs and people. I have to disagree when it comes to the crating, 8 or more hours is too long.

I would assume we are talking about the wire crates, not shipping crates. I would never leave my dog in a shipping crate, but the regular wire ones I don't have an issue with. Since many of us, myself included, don't have the money for doggie daycare ($25 a day minimum in my area, and I work 5 days a week) or a petsitter, a crate is a very viable and safe solution. It's much worse to come home to find a dog choking on something or find that he has gotten into something.

No, it's not a shipping crate. I'm in agreement with Dagna. I couldn't sit still knowing my dog could find something to choke on or whatever. Crating her is a temporary situation. I did talk to a neighbor who can let my dog out at lunch time to run a round the yard a bit. I got home from work last night and let my dog out of her crate. She was SO excited to see me. She almost knocked me over. I gave her a nice walk and wrestled with her. Thanks for the replies everyone!!

We crate our dogs when they are puppies, until we trust them in the house while we are gone. Our first Great Dane had to be crated till he was two. We found a six month lab that never had to be crated, and our current Great was crated until he was eight months or somewhere around there. We don’t even have the crate in the house anymore, and they never harm anything.

From the day we brought home our Great Dane (@ 8 weeks old) he was crated (or in the case of a Great Dane it's a cage) whenever we were not home. I believe it's safer for a puppy to be in that environment, plus they won't destroy your house when you're gone. I used to go home every day at lunch for the first year we had him to let him out, so he probably stayed in there 4-5 hours as a puppy then worked his way up to 10 hours when he got older.

He's been out of the kennel since he was 3. He's mature enough that it's no longer necessary. He now has free reign of the house when we're at work. Basically, all he does is sleep so it's not a big deal. :D
