Just FYI, the Ten Plagues were not just arbitrary and disconnected plagues; they were aimed at specific Egyptian [false] deities.
Exodus 12:12 said:
For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.
The idea, of course, was to show the Egyptians that they were going up against a Living God.

Stretching other religions to try and say Christianity is a copycat isn't anything new and it's been debunked over and over.
Yup --- we call that Diabolical Mimicry.

Commendable, but the Bible is not necessary for such an attitude.
Commendable?

You find that commendable?

Would you like to volunteer to find us a bona fide witch today, so we can issue her a summons into court?

Yes, I find not killing witches to be commendable. Don't you?

Would you like to volunteer to find us a bona fide witch today, so we can issue her a summons into court?

What? No. Why would I? You asked how I felt about people who used the Bible for the latter, referring to the (paraphrased) statement "The bible justifies killing witches and it justifies not killing witches."

I find not killing witches (the latter part of the statement) to be commendable.

If you really meant to ask how I felt about the former part of the statement, I find it deplorable.

How does one mimic something before the thing it mimics even exists?

Don't be silly Skaloop, the same way the Bible is "prescient" regarding the Internet, evolution being EEEEVIL and the expansion of the universe:

It was, because contemporary Christians say it was so! ;)

Good question.

Take the Flood for instance.

After it went down like it did, the Epic of Gilgamesh came out, written by a nation whose founder was not only Noah's grandson, but a man who had gone prodigal.

Remember? He started out as a 'mighty hunter before the LORD'?

All Satan has to do now, in the 21st century, is make sure there's enough "educated" people to convince the common people that Sumeria existed before the Flood.

Heck yeah! Just like Gilligan's Island was a total mimicry of Lost.

Or enough uneducated people to convince the common people that it didn't.

Wow, No True Scotsman is an old one, huh.

It did.

Or let me guess, God lied, sorry, "embedded" an entire civilisation that predates the flood?

What about all the other civilisations that predate the flood also?

Wouldn't you expect a wolf in sheep's clothing to do that?
I would expect someone who has faith to do that.

You can call that "diabolic mimicry" as much as you like... but it seems that the copy is completely undistinguishable from the original.

You may assume - not, for consistency´s sake you must assume - that everyone who disagrees with you on some "heart-believed" points is aware that he is wrong and not following the Word of God. If other people - disagreeing people - could sincerly, faithfully, with all their heart, believe that the Bible - God himself! - commanded them to do whatever you disagree with... and call you a "wolf in sheep´s clothing" for disagreeing with them... then you would have to admit that your whole "faith" argument comes down to nothing.

If they could have real faith in something wrong... so could you. Inacceptable.

And so Schisms are born..

I was walking across a bridge one day, and I saw a man standing on the edge, about to jump. I ran over and said: "Stop. Don't do it."

"Why shouldn't I?" he asked.

"Well, there's so much to live for!"

"Like what?"

"Are you religious?"

He said: "Yes."

I said: "Me too. Are you Christian or Buddhist?"

"Christian."

"Me too. Are you Catholic or Protestant?"

"Protestant."

"Me too. Are you Episcopalian or Baptist?"

"Baptist."

"Wow. Me too. Are you Baptist Church of God or Baptist Church of the Lord?"

"Baptist Church of God."

"Me too. Are you original Baptist Church of God, or are you Reformed Baptist Church of God?"

"Reformed Baptist Church of God."

"Me too. Are you Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1879, or Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1915?"

He said: "Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1915."

I said: "Die, heretic scum," and pushed him off.

And so Schisms are born..
Cute dialog.

I happen to be an Independent Baptist.

Know what that means?

That means that the Crusades, the Inquisition, the Witch Hunts, and everything else you guys think are valid fodder today have no bearing whatsoever on us.

Even if there, by some wild stretch of the imagination, happened to be found one [backslidding] Independent Baptist in any of the four groups I mentioned above, it still wouldn't have any bearing whatsoever on us.

In fact, let's make a dichotomy out of this.

If every single person in history that marched off to the Crusades, tried persons in the Inquisition, and/or hanged Witches in Salem were Independent Baptists, it would have no effect on us --- butterfly or otherwise.

Except to you guys, who love to play the fly-in-the-ointment routine and accuse the entire Body of Christ for the actions of just a few people, who probably weren't even members in the first place.
