Does anyone know any clever ways to overcome gluttony and intemperance?

It’s very hard work but if you feel called to it, it can be a wonderful life and a great way to raise your little one. :)
I would definitely like the solitude of a rural life. I'm more of a country boy anyway, cities gimme too much anxiety. My "city" (100K people) is about as big as I can tolerate. If we decide almonds aren't viable longterm I still have a vineyard/winery in my back pocket. I might pull out the orchard and plant 20 acres of vines then either make my own wine or sell the crop to New Clairvaux for their wines.

I agree though, that's probably his best chance of growing up well adjusted. Especially if I got him involved in things like 4H.

But I'm also preparing to go on the carnivore diet.

We read the story of Eli's sons that were called "Evil men". ONE of the reasons is because they did not burn the fat off of the meat before they at it. Science has overwhelming evidence that fat esp from meat is not something we should eat. I pay extra money for lean meat. The leaner the meat the longer you are going to live free from being sick. People say I am going to die someday, I may as well die from something. What they do not realize is how sick we can be and how dysfunctional people become because of diet and bad food choices. Doctors make money when they keep people alive, even if they are sick. Actually all the more money they can make when treating long term sickness. If you want a better quality life, then stay away from fat and food with a high fat content.

For me meat is hard to digest. Use to be they would give the football team a steak dinner before the big game. Now they give them pasta because it is digested and converted to energy for the game when the meat is still in their tummy being digested and slowing them down. So I avoid meat simply because it takes longer to digest and requires us to have bacteria in us to break it down. There are buddist monks that purify their body of bacteria. They still die but when they do their body does not decompose. Even they have x-rayed statues of praying monks and found a body in the statue.

not yet anyway,
Everyone warned me and warned me but I would not listen. Now I wish I had. I would love to go back and undo the mess that got me into the condition I am in now. Lots of people my age are a lot healthier than I am.

It's that I'm addicted to fast food and often consume it simply because I don't want whatever was made at home. I have it usually once or twice a day, I don't eat breakfast but I'll almost certainly eat lunch out and then if my wife makes something I don't like (like soup) or perhaps is planning dinner too late then I'll just tell her I'll get something else.

It's a financial problem, it's a health problem, but more than that I suspect I overindulge simply because I can and it's what I want. I never say no to myself when it comes to fast food.
The principles from Allen Carr's famous book, The Easy Way to Stop Smoking, have been adapted for various other addictions. I see one adaptation is Allen Carr's Easy Way to Quit Emotional Eating. I didn't see any that were related to fast food in particular, although there is also one on weight loss.

I find that his principles have a way of breaking us out of our preconceptions regarding bad habits. For example, one thing Carr will speak about is the way that a bad habit is self-perpetuating, and once we are able to fully grasp how undesirable it is we stop justifying it. This seems obvious, but I find that his arguments are both sound and helpful in overcoming such things. He is opposed to what he calls "the willpower method," hence the "easy" way.

If you read a book like that I think at the very least you would be able to cut down. It will also be needful to find ways to address the stress that fast food is currently addressing.

I have been a slave to fast food for 15 years now. I eat it every day, often twice a day and I only eat two meals (I'm not a breakfast eater).

It's shameful, it's harmful in more ways than one, and I don't know how to stop. I've tried soft approaches and I've tried to be radical but the way my brain works is anytime I try to control my diet with something like this I just get defiant and find a way to get what I want as soon as possible.

Sins of lust and pride and wrath are often the subject of people's advice in books and podcasts and such but this may be my biggest struggle. Any suggestions and advice for this childish vice of mine would be appreciated.
Well, look at the money you spend at the end of each month. Fast food can cause your food expenses to rise. So, at the end of each month, add up your receipts from fast food and compare to receipts from groceries. For me, fast food is only for special occasions such as on road trips. Breakfast can also help you reduce your cravings for McDonald's and other restaurants as your stomach would be full in the morning.

Something's better than nothing, I'll look into Carr's work and see if I can make use of it. Thanks for the recommendation.

That's unfortunately a big reason I'm trying to break this addiction, I probably spend anywhere from $300 all the way up to $700 a month on eating out, and 98% of that is just myself since my wife and kids only want it rarely.

That is expensive. Casinos have a self-exclusion list (never gambled, never will, but have heard of the term). It would be nice if fast food facilities could do the same, but that would eat into profits, pun intended. But, a self-exclusion list for fast food would be a great idea. But, if the managers know you well and recognize your face, they could decide not to serve you, if you tell them that you have a fast food addiction that you are trying to break.

Tell me about it, inflation is definitely having an effect too. Although I've gotten pretty good at stocking up and redeeming points and rewards on the various fast food store apps out there lol.
I'm also in the same boat, and I also need assistance. I'm technically overweight and have high blood pressure. Thank you for posting :)
My prayers for you brother, I know your struggle.

It really is, and that sounds like a great idea. I wish they'd do that too. Maybe there could be a reverse solution where you inform your bank not to approve any transactions with XYZ restaurants (a list), but I guess that could make a mess of things for the stores.

I suffer from the same thing brother. We can try to do it on our own but then fail. Temperance is one of the cardinal virtues, and it takes work to develop, but every journey starts with the first step. If all we do is think of our bodies, it becomes a distraction, and our enemy loves distractions.

He tells you that you are no good because you are fat, and then gets you to obsess over it. This then becomes a road block to spiritual growth.

The first step is to develop a disciplined prayer life. We don’t like discipline, we want instant results which is why we are also addicted to fast food. Jesus call us to deny ourselves and follow him.

Begin with the simplest devotion. Go to confession regularly. At least once a month to stay in sanctifying grace. Receive the Eucharist often while in the state of sanctifying grace, if possible become a daily communicant. Do something, build up slowly. Start with three Hail Marys on your knees at night right before you go to bed. Move on to a daily rosary and ask Mary the favor or her help.

If you want to know your sin then begin a devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows, and she will reveal your sin to you. Gluttony may not be the primary spirit tormenting you, it’s just a distraction. I found mine was a spirit of fear.

I have not yet conquered gluttony, but have overcome lust. It will fall by the grace of God

Also study. I like to listen to Chad Ripperger on you tube. He has great insights and gives talks on the virtues and the spiritual battle

Peace be with you

That might work. Try asking your bank to not approve your transactions for a list of fast food restaurants in your area, and maybe they will be obliged to help. Some banks already block gambling transactions, if you ask. So, the banks might be willing to block a blacklist of restaurants.

I think this would be messy and would not prove to be worthwhile.
