That's because it is a philosophical concept, not a scientific one. Something is generally considered living when it is self maintaining and dead when it is not longer able to repair itself.
No, it is not philosophical. It is empirical. You can see the difference between a live and dead body. You can measure it in terms of a beating heart, or breathing, or brain waves.

It's a big drop from a potential eternal life to a shaky maybe 120 years that's for sure.
The irony is that a turtle can outlive us and trees do it all the time.
Apparently something was ruined when Adam sinned and we inherited it.
