Yes indeed. My Dad had an old Edison record player. The records were 1/8" thick and seemed heavy. He had some records of Roy Acuff (spelling??) from the grand ole opry.flaglady said:I remember that as well! We had a gramophone exactly like this one and used to quieten the volume by stuffing a pair of our dad's socks in the cabinet (ours had long since lost it's classy screen behind the doors!)
I still have a 78rpm copy of Johnny Ray's "Cry" which was a no 1 of the day!! Anyone remember that?!

Wow... and we grumble about our lives.Torah said:I remember a very old pastor friend that told me back in the winter of 1920 he had a little church out in the mid west. And on Sunday morning he would have to get up 2 hr before church. At home he would start a fire in his wood burning stove. He would take a shovel full of hot coals and place them on the ground under the oil pan of his model-T. This would warm up the oil so he could start the engine and drive to his church and get a fire going in the wood burning stove to warm the wood building.

flaglady said:ooh! Spike Jones and The City Slickers!! Unsurpassable! We had "Suretan Yob" (Nature's Boy backwards) and "The Hawaiin Warchant". We also had Gracie Field's "Now Is The Hour" - a tear jerker if ever I heard one!!
Now is the hour when we must say goodbye.
Soon you'll be sailing far across the sea.
While you're away, oh please remember me.
When you return you'll find me waiting here.

You're right, it is definitely a tear jerker! So is 'Cry' which I remember well! So many great old songs that trigger special memories!

pilgrimgal said:I remember Spike Jones...especially "John and Marsha". In that one a gal said..."John" and a guy said "Marsha." They just kept repeating this louder and louder until it reached a crescendo. Doesn't sound like much but with the musical background it was really funny although melodramatic. Then the funky band would start in really loud.![]()

Radidio said:I had 45's of Spike Jones doing the "Nutcraker Suite". As a matter of fact I might still have it around somewhere packed away. I got a "turntable" around here somewhere to and need to hook it up an listen to the first Elvis LP when he was like 16? Anyway he was young. Didn't really like him that much but his "Hawaii" LP was pretty decent.
Still got lots of records from years ago. Favs are Righteous Brothers, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendricks. Yea I know ----- that was from my "wild" days![]()
