  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I remember when my daughter was the youth group president at our church. One of their tasks was to provide the goodies for the church fellowship after both services. We had to pick up the donuts at the bakery early and make coffee and provide juice for the gathering afterward. This lasted every Sunday for a year. :)

What church tasks do YOU remember?

I remember Sunday mornings listening to Tennessee Ernie Ford on our old record player while we were getting dressed for church.

I remember that as well! We had a gramophone exactly like this one and used to quieten the volume by stuffing a pair of our dad's socks in the cabinet (ours had long since lost it's classy screen behind the doors!)

I still have a 78rpm copy of Johnny Ray's "Cry" which was a no 1 of the day!! Anyone remember that?!

Yes indeed. My Dad had an old Edison record player. The records were 1/8" thick and seemed heavy. He had some records of Roy Acuff (spelling??) from the grand ole opry.

I remember a very old pastor friend that told me back in the winter of 1920 he had a little church out in the mid west. And on Sunday morning he would have to get up 2 hr before church. At home he would start a fire in his wood burning stove. He would take a shovel full of hot coals and place them on the ground under the oil pan of his model-T. This would warm up the oil so he could start the engine and drive to his church and get a fire going in the wood burning stove to warm the wood building.

Yes, sure do remember that song...and especially the words..."you'll feel better if you cry."

  :D

BTW, I have a 78rpm collection including many of Glenn Miller's hits, Vaughn Monroe (Ghost Riders in the Sky) Spike Jones...and even one of Nelson Eddy and Jeanette McDonald singing "Rose Marie."

ooh! Spike Jones and The City Slickers!! Unsurpassable! We had "Suretan Yob" (Nature's Boy backwards) and "The Hawaiin Warchant". We also had Gracie Field's "Now Is The Hour" - a tear jerker if ever I heard one!!

Now is the hour when we must say goodbye.
Soon you'll be sailing far across the sea.
While you're away, oh please remember me.
When you return you'll find me waiting here.

I remember Spike Jones...especially "John and Marsha". In that one a gal said..."John" and a guy said "Marsha." They just kept repeating this louder and louder until it reached a crescendo. Doesn't sound like much but with the musical background it was really funny although melodramatic. Then the funky band would start in really loud.  ;)

My babysitter used to sing this song to us. It was in the mid-late forties I think. Anyway, I remember it.

That song was a favorite my first year in nurses training! Wow, what great years those were!
You're right, it is definitely a tear jerker! So is 'Cry' which I remember well! So many great old songs that trigger special memories!

I love Bobby Darin's Mack the Knife and enjoyed seeing Kevin Spacy sing that and Beyond the Sea in the recent film about Darin's life.

And on T.V. yesterday we watched Debbie Reynolds who played the first Tammy in Tammy and the Bachelor...with a very young Leslie Nielson as the bachelor. I really liked watching reruns of Darin's wife, Sandra Dee, as Tammy in other Tammy films. :)

Hello all of you with those memories to share, I am still renovating our new place and getting ready to move so haven't been here much lately.

Sandra Dee also played Gidget, I think...and maybe Sally Field played Gidget on T.V. after the Flying Nun. Not sure? Do you remember?

Speaking of old songs...I remember Nat King Cole singing "Unforgetable" which really is unforgetable. And Tony Bennett was my favorite back then when he sang "Because of You." He is still going strong, isn't he?

I had 45's of Spike Jones doing the "Nutcraker Suite". As a matter of fact I might still have it around somewhere packed away. I got a "turntable" around here somewhere to and need to hook it up an listen to the first Elvis LP when he was like 16? Anyway he was young. Didn't really like him that much but his "Hawaii" LP was pretty decent.

Still got lots of records from years ago. Favs are Righteous Brothers, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendricks. Yea I know ----- that was from my "wild" days :)

I don't remember Spike Jones doing the "Nutcracker". That must have been really funny. What was the first Elvis record...."Heartbreak Hotel" ???? I especially remember "Love me tender" probably because it was a ballad.
