  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Makes our Wimpy Bars sound positively tame! But they were the very first burger/coffee bars of the American style to come to the UK in the 1960s. It was considered mega cool to say you were going for a Wimpy (Big Mac only little!) and my student nurse friends and I would dash out in our afternoon break so we could say we'd been to the Wimpy for coffee! Sounds positively daft nowadays!

:D:D Your comment about mentioning such things nowadays makes me think of a post I read the other day, "youth is wasted on the young." Hmmmm, that statement makes me think back to the things my parents used to say to me. I wonder if I say the same kinds of things to my kids!!!! :)

^_^ ^_^ ^_^ That one brings back memories!! The burger drive-ins where you could press a button and call in your order and the waitress brought it out on a tray that clipped onto your window. We'd sit and watch the hotrods driving up and down "burger row" looking for someone to race. :D:D

When I was really little (and we are talking pre-50's)...my big brother and his girlfriend (He was a teenager) used to take me to a drive-in where girls dressed in short shirts and on roller skates skated to the car and put a tray in the window. Then you ordered and ate in the car. They had what looked like a mountain of ice cream, lots of syrup, and whipped cream and a cherry on top...of those wonderful ice cream sundaes.

BTW, does anyone remember skating on medal skates which attached to your shoes and you used a key to tighten them?

In the 6th grade...we had this huge cement pad next to our school building. We would rush out there, attach those medal skates with the key, during recess to skate for a few minutes, but mostly during the noon hour. I can remember learning to skate there and falling down and skinning my knees more than once. ;)

I also had a pair of black and white and later brown and beige saddle shoes.

Oh I forgot about the A&W Root beer stands. They severed root beer in cold frosty mugs and it was delicious also had great hotdogs with chili sauce and chopped onions. Mmmmmmm……

Yes I remember the skates which were meant to clamp onto the sole of your shoe with little clamps. I could never get them to stay on. During that time skating rinks were popular in our area. Perhaps one of the biggest of that time. On the weekends it was packed.

I was thrilled to get my first pair of roller skates with shoes on them...the kind with the big wooden wheels which I used at the indoor roller rink in our town. Friday nights we got there early to take lessons for an hour. Then we had skating until ten or so, and, man, it was crowded! Mother made me a skating skirt...and I thought that was pretty cool. Later as an adult I switched to ice skating in Alaska. ^_^

That's a pretty drastic change from a cozy indoor skating rink :D

In the city where I grew up,they used to intentionally flood part of a parking area near the football stadium in the winter just before a freeze. So when it froze it was nice and smooth. It was shallow so there was no danger of going thru the ice. There were barrels set up with burning wood, etc... to get warm. It was a great place to ice skate

We did our ice skating in Alaska at the school or park outdoor rinks and sometimes went to the indoor ice skating rinks. But I loved skating on Goose Lake the best or else out at our cabin which was on a lake too.. But you had to wait until the lake froze...usually good and deep ice by Thanksgiving. Just beautiful on the lake where you could see Lily pods under the ice.

Ice skating was one of winters pleasures that I really looked forward to. We skated many times on big lakes that never froze all the way across so you had to be very careful not to go to the thin ice. I can remember that when we first started each winter my ankles would get so sore. Also if you fell it was a rough landing :)

Yep. Penny loafers and bobbie socks. I remember when my sister got caught wearing her bobbie socks in her bra.... :D what a memory that is.

I have less than a month to go to catch up with you since I turn 69 next month.....but just so you'll know I know how it goes..I was giving the cat a bath the other day and got distracted before I put her in the basin...forgot I had the water running. You can imagine the flood when I heard it pouring over... ;) Now ask me about some trivial fact out of the ancient memory bank and I am right there. Like .... what was the name of Elizbeth Taylor's first husband? :)
