  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Well, I got to put the UK on this map!

I remember the old, old black Ford cars with flat vertical windscreens and no clutch! They were always black BTW!
I remember when we got fire logs and coal delivered by horse and cart and one time the man let me hold the reins while the horse was walking! (was about six!)
I remember chalk and slates in school instead of books.
I remember we had a washing machine, a big old round green thing on legs with an electric mangle that my mother refused to use because she almost caught her fingers in the mangle the first time she used it! Was my dad mad!
I remember buying biscuits loose out of tins and cheese that was cut off a big block, fresh bacon and ham that was cut off the joint on the same slicer!

Then there's my nursing:-
I remember infusion sets for IVs that were made of red rubber tubing - boiled to sterilize - and a glass drip chamber
I remember glass syringes with metal ends
I remember red rubber mackintoshes that we put under the patient's sheets - horrid hard things, probably responsible for 60% of pressure sores!
I remember 'doing a back round' when we would visit every patient and wash their sit-upons then rub vigorously with a cocktail of spirit and olive oil, then powder liberally with talc. Their heels got similar treatment. I think it prevented a lot of pressure sores!
And finally, I remember the old uniforms with starched collars and cuffs, nice clean, white aprons and a starched, folded cap, plus the wool cape, navy or black with a red lining which we would reverse at Christmas to be cloaked in red whilst we went round the wards on Christmas eve singing carols with lanterns to light our song sheets.
Happy days!

These are a few of my fellow student nurses doing carols in 1960

I love all of that Flaglady! So wonderful to reminisce and hear others do the same!
Thanks Birdie for this thread! So great to go back there, especially remembering my student nurse days so long ago, actually 53 yrs ago but I'll never forget the fun and friendships that have lasted through all these years!!

Yeah, I did my student teaching in 1959 and then all blackboards were really black and not white or green.

Did you have up and down staircases in your school? This meant you could go only one way on them. My first day as a student teacher in a big city high school...I remember going up the down staircase just when the bell rang and this huge pack of students came down and right at me. Several hollered, "YOU'RE ON THE DOWN STAIRCASE!!"

In the late sixties there was a book and a movie about a teacher (played by Sandy Denis) called, Up the Down Staircase...And then there was Blackboard Jungle with Sidney Poitier as a student.

Did any of you ever talk into tin cans...??? Come on I'm embarrassed about it too, but I did. Take 2 tin cans, punch a hole in the center of each bottom, attach a string and stretch..now talk into the can and pretend you are Captain Midnight talking to Ichabod Mudd. .

Didn't talk with tin cans but used to put a glass up to the wall and ear to the glass and then a friend would go on the other side and you could hear whatever they had to say.

Did anyone play music using a comb and wax paper? It was sort of a harmonica. Also if you blew over an empty and open bottle top...it made a noise like a small fog horn. Still works...;) :D ;)

yes I did the cans too and that is funny I was just thinking the other day about showing my grandchildren how to do it.I forgot about the blade of grass ( that was cool ) blowing over a pop bottle was like playing the flute . I played the flute in school. whenever I showed my kids the bottle blowing they were surprised that I could hit a high octive.
that picture you have Flaglady reminds me how dark and dingy the hopitals and nursing homes and Dr.'s offfices used to be.
when my husband had his transplant I stayed in the hospital in the old nun's quarter. BOY that was spooky and it gave me the creeps. everything echoed and creaked and cracked and was so dark I eventually stayed in his room , refused to go back

^_^ This thread is really a trip down memory lane!! :) I remember my sister and me stringing tin cans together and seeing how far away we could go and still hear each other with a can affixed to our ears.:D As I recall it didn't work very well, but it did work. Did you have a radio flyer wagon? I think that was one of my favorite toys and I'd pile all my little dollies up in it and pull them from place to place all over our yard. How about hoola hoops?? Could you hold it up and keep it twirling? I remember seeing contests on tv, do you?

I grew up on a farm in West Texas. I remember going to the "five and dime" store with those squeeky floors, that was before TG&Y came to town in the '60's.
Rexall drug stores and the soda fountain.
Full service Enco and Gulf stations for $0.15/gal.
My '52 Ford pickup with the flat head 6-cyl. no radio and the "260" AC.

I remember bread for a quarter/loaf and working in the grocery store and seprating all those returned bottles so they'd go back to the right vendors for credit.

Remember how good hot dogs used to be? I seldom eat them anymore because they never are as good as the ones we used to get at a little hot dog stand that was on Main Street. I wonder what happened to hot dogs.

I remember going to a Tasty Freeze type place across from our high school and getting the best hamburgers I have ever eaten. They were called salad burgers because they had so much lettuce and salad things on them. And with those big milk shakes made out of hard ice cream and milk..they were wonderful. :yum:

Around the corner from our house was My T Burger and my kids really loved that place. When I missed one I could usually find them there. Funny that even today if one of them are in that area they make a point of going back to MyTBurger for a special treat! I guess we all cherish the favorite things from our youth!
Thanks again Birdie for giving us this chance to go back in time!!

We had the "Bobcat" drive-in. Everyone gathered there to get a burger & coke, then 'made the drag' for hours upon hours on Friday's and Saturday's.

^_^ ^_^ ^_^ That one brings back memories!! The burger drive-ins where you could press a button and call in your order and the waitress brought it out on a tray that clipped onto your window. We'd sit and watch the hotrods driving up and down "burger row" looking for someone to race. :D:D
